opensuse-xgl-settings will not be updated for openSUSE 11.0 since it's obsoleted by tools included in the distro

A simple gui for openSUSE 10.3 KDE-users, for:
  • Enabling desktop effects with Xgl / Compiz
  • Selecting Compiz plugins (including wobbly windows)
  • Installing and enabling Compiz Fusion with Xgl or Nvidia-glx.
  • Install 3D drivers

  • How to install
    1) Download the RPM

    2) Right click it in konqueror -> Open with Install Software

    opensuse-xgl-settings depends on kommander-runtime

opensuse-xgl-settings is now also available on this openSUSE Build Service repository:

    How to run it
Start it from your menu: System -> Configuration -> opensuse-xgl-settings

    or run the command: opensuse-xgl-settings

It's assumed that you have a graphics card that supports XGL with the proper driver installed.

  • Troubleshooting
All problems following use of opensuse-xgl-settings should be easily solved by simply disabling XGL, by running this command as root:

    gnome-xgl-switch --disable-xgl
    (or 'nvidia-xconfig --no-composite' when using nvidia-glx)

And run this command as normal user:

    touch ~/.config/compiz/disable-compiz

I have received very valuable contributions from:
Beineri, tsuroeruso, froksen, apokryphos, raddy, bjerrk, cyberorg

  • Updated to work with latest Compiz Fusion startup scripts
  • Added support for nvidia-glx
  • Added support for installing 3D-drivers (KMPs)
  • Some UI polish
  • (Much of it contributed by cyberorg)

  • The first release for openSUSE 10.3

  • LicenseGPL
    SUSE(opensuse-xgl-settings 10.3 RPM)
    (opensuse-xgl-settings *.kmdr ("sources"))
    (opensuse-xgl-settings 10.2 (unmaintained))

     Shortkey issues

    Hi again.
I don't know if you have noticed, but it seams that most of my normal shortcuts to KDE gets disabled when I use Compiz on openSUSE 10.2.
The Kickoff menu ALT-F2 does not work anymore and it is no longer possible to navigate through it using hotkeys. Beagle's ALT+SPACE does not work either. Hotkeys related to normal programs works fine.
I dont know if this is possible to fix (I mean, its a whole new window-manager taking over). But I still find it strange that Beagle wont use any shortcuts that I define in its preferences.

But again, I dont use these shortcuts anyway. But it would definately be an improvement :)
    Keep up the good work

     Could not find kmdr

Hi, I install the kcommander-runtime, but when I run the xgl-settings it still came out:
    Could not find 'kmdr-executor' executable.

    How can I solve it?

    No idea.

    do you have /opt/kde3/bin/kmdr-executor?

Sounds like some breakage on your system. maybe PATH-related.

    Utterly Excellent!!

I got beryl up and running on an ATI fglrx based Thinkpad T60p in less than 3 minutes. Wobly windows, the whole thing just works.

I'd been trying to do it manually for a week, and ended up reinstalling before this cool tool showed up.

     not opensuse?

Will this work on regular suse 10.2 (not opensuse)?
I haven't had much luck running desktop effects on KDE with the version I have right now. It's not fully functional.

    I don't know what you're talking about.

There is no "regular SUSE 10.2".

There is openSUSE 10.2 - on which it works..

Then there is SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10(sp1) - opensuse-xgl-settings does not work on that.

It does not work on SUSE Linux 10.1 either (SUSE Linux 10.1 is the predecessor of openSUSE 10.2)

You need to learn the correct name of the operating system you are running. Run 'cat /etc/SuSE-release' on the command line.

How do you like Plasma 5?
     The best KDE Desktop ever.
     Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
