Description:

SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for MPlayer, from basic features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support for MPlayer filters and more.

One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave... don't worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume...

Other additional interesting features:

* Audio track switching. You can choose the audio track you want to listen. Works with avi and mkv. And of course with DVDs.
* Seeking by mouse wheel. You can use your mouse wheel to go forward or backward in the video.
* Video equalizer, allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma of the video image.
* Multiple speed playback. You can play at 2X, 4X... and even in slow motion.
* Filters. Several filters are available: deinterlace, postprocessing, denoise... and even a karaoke filter (voice removal).
* Audio and subtitles delay adjustment. Allows you to sync audio and subtitles.
* Advanced options, such as selecting a demuxer or video & audio codecs.
* Playlist. Allows you to enqueue several files to be played one after each other. Autorepeat and shuffle supported too.
* Preferences dialog. You can easily configure every option of SMPlayer by using a nice preferences dialog.
* Translations: currently SMPlayer is translated into more than 20 languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese....

Changelog:

Version 14.3.0.

* Possibility to play (non-protected) blu-ray discs.
* The control for fullscreen mode has been rewritten and improved. Now it is displayed over the video.
* (Windows) New option in Preferences -> Subtitles to enable or disable the use of the Windows font directory. Disabling this option prevents the annoying font scanning.
* Some presets have been added to the audio equalizer.
* Better support for multimedia keys. This can help control SMPlayer with a remote control.
* The option "Move the window when the video area is dragged" has been fixed.
* (Windows) Now it's possible to open Windows shortcuts (symlinks).
* Better support for Youtube.
* (Windows) Better screensaver disabling.
* Many bugfixes.
* Possibility to compile with Qt 5.

 Better than Imagined

 by Sebien on: Aug 13 2007

Score 50%

Another comment to say that my first impression was good.

I tryed it, I adopted it.

I especially like the way we can configure how many seconds we move in the stream using the Left and Right keys. In fact the default 10 seconds are very good. It's what I wanted to configure in Kaffeine, but I couldn't.

Well seen.
Good work.

 Mistake in 0.5.41

 by rvm on: Aug 23 2007

I've just realized there's a small mistake in the 0.5.41 package.

The compilation will be done in debug mode. That means:

linux) the binary will be much bigger than usual. There could be performance issues as the code might not be optimized.

windows) compilation will fail (unless you have Qt compiled in debug mode)

The fix is easy, edit src/smplayer.pro and replace "debug" with "release" in the 4th line.

Thanks for the info, its only about 10 KB bigger, but if you say it can cause performance loose, that could be annoying :), packs recompiled

anyway, a made an english subpage for Slackware packages of your program, it should be updated with packages rather often

i hope it will be useful

Well, my binary was about 9 MB size with debugging symbols. I guess the Slackware packager removed the symbols, leaving a binary with more or less the same usual size.

I added you link to the smplayer download page :)

BTW, version 0.5.42 is out. It contains a fix for a serious bug: a lot of actions were missing in the action's editor.

I recently went through nearly every remotely popular KDE video player out there after having extensive troubles with Kaffeine, and was the most satisfied with this one. Now that the playlist can be embedded into the main window, there's no longer *anything* I miss about Kaffeine. Thanks a lot!!

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
