KSmoothDock is a cool desktop panel (like KDE's kicker) for KDE 3.2 and above with smooth zooming (2 modes: normal and parabolic). Its aim is to provide a cool alternative/complement to kicker. As it is intended for KDE/Linux, its behaviour will be like that of kicker.
- Programming language: C++
- Libraries used: KDE 3.2 (or above)

Hope it will be useful for you!

It seems that automake-1.9 is not backward compatible with automake-1.7, so please upgrade to automake-1.9 before you compile KSmoothDock. To check the version of automake on your system, run:
automake --version

TO INSTALL: Unzip, cd to the directory ksmoothdock then run:
make install

Then run:

(if when you run "ksmoothdock", nothing happens, then it is likely that your KDE dir is not standard. In this case, either:
- cd to the directory ksmoothdock/src, then run "./ksmoothdock", or
- Re-do the above sequence (./configure ...), but instead of "./configure", type:
./configure --prefix=/YOUR_KDE_DIR

IF YOU BUILD ANY BINARY PACKAGE: please send it to me, thanks.

SCREENSHOTS: normal zoom mode and parabolic zoom mode (#1), config dialog (#2), quick launchers editor (#3)

Short FAQ:
1. System tray? I will implement this feature very soon.

2. Drag-and-drop? I will implement this very soon.

3. Real transparency? I will implement this when the technology (XGl or any other) becomes more mature, stable and widely used. At the moment, it is not so yet.

DANG Viet D(z)ung

New features:
- New command line options:
--resetConfig reset configuration data
--resetLaunchers reset quick launchers data

Bug fixes:
- Fixed some display bugs (on both normal and parabolic zoom modes) in v4.4.

- Parabolic zoom mode now works correctly under latest KDE releases.

New features:
- The "auto-hiding" feature has been re-implemented
- Added right-click popup menu for pager, taskbar (re-added) and clock
- Dock Position Conflict Dialog: added an option not to show it again

Other changes:
- The range of icon sizes have been increased
- Desktop icon area is now adjusted correctly
- Some other minor fixes.

New features:
- The Parabolic Zoom mode has been considerably improved.
- A task that demands attention now has better blinking notification.

Bug fix:
- The dock now does not steal mouse/keyboard focus when being zoomed in
- Fixed other minor bugs.

Other changes:
- The popup menu of a task button has been removed, because while it is of little use, it has problems with the parabolic zoom's animation.

New feature:
- Blink a task's icon when it demands attention

Some minor optimisations

Fixed the following bug:
- Option "Show windows from all desktops": "off" does not function properly

New feature:
- Add a separator between the launchers and the taskbar when the pager is not shown.

Fixed the following bugs:
- Normal zoom mode, LEFT or RIGHT position : the dock does not highlight the launcher on click acknowledgement.
- Normal zoom mode: a tiny part of the dock is not updated correctly.
- Parabolic zoom mode, LEFT position: drawing bug.
- Parabolic zoom mode: mouse click still works outside the visible area of the dock.
- About dialog: some text corrected.

v4.0: Redesign and rewrite the program from scratch. Thus it should now run better overall and is easier to maintain (fix bugs, implement new features...) than previous versions.

New features:
- POSITION SETTING: now the dock can be set to one of four positions on the screen: TOP, BOTTOM, LEFT, RIGHT.
- Switch zoom mode now does not require restarting the dock.
- Left click on the clock now shows the calendar.
- Add a "create a new link to folder" button in Edit Quick Launch Menu dialog.

Bug fix:
- The pager now displays mini-wallpapers correctly when the dock starts.
- Fixed other minor bugs.

I was looking through kde-look for a toolbar that was similar to the MacOSX toolbar without straight up xeroxing it.

Being a noob to linux, I find this toolbar so easy to set up and use.

Gentoo, kde-3.5_beta1 and qt-3.3.4-r8.

First I tried ./configure --without-arts --prefix=/usr/kde/3.5/ && make && su -c 'make install'. I got:

configure.in:43: version mismatch. This is Automake 1.9.6,
configure.in:43: but the definition used by this AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE
configure.in:43: comes from Automake 1.9.1. You should recreate
configure.in:43: aclocal.m4 with aclocal and run automake again.

make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/i92guboj/opt/kde/ksmoothdock'
make: *** [all] Error 2

Well, I ran "aclocal && automake" and now it start compiling ok. But at some point I get:

Maybe this helps another Gentoo user or anyone getting the same error. I did: make clean make -f Makefile.cvs ./configure --prefix=/usr/kde/3.5 --without-arts make su -c 'make install' Now it compiles fine. :)

Hey. I tried the same thing on slackware and it failed, then used your instructions and it works fine:

  • make -f Makefile.cvs
  • ./configure --without-arts
  • make
  • su, make install.

The only thing is that now i need to re-configure everything.
Also, a bit of an important bug that needs fixing is that ksmoothdock appears on the alt-tab list. Is there any patch for kde 3.4.2 to stop this? Thanks

Try edit file aclocal.m4, where is AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE, this change to 1.9.6, and:
    ./configure --without-arts --prefix=/usr/kde/3.4

     Replacemnt 4 kicker?

by gunnicom on: Oct 14 2005

I installed KSmoothdock a while ago, but removed it, because of following:

I like my taskbar complete at the bottom of the page.
If i have my taskbar at the bottom AND KSmoothdock at the bottom it fills twice the space, because there is the taskbar AND KSmoothdock ...
If i choose autohide for the Taskbar, there is a unfine behaviour, that KSmoothdock is pushed to above to the taskbar, or under. I am @work, so i cant test it right now. There was an other strange behaviour, if i did a preference for the taskbar it was aplied to KSMoothdock (like autohide).
    Now to my question:

Is it possible to install KSmoothdock as a replacdement for kicker, so that it integrates into the normal taskbar, and is not above or under it?

You can put kicker at the top and hide it, while have KSmoothDock running at the bottom, I guess?

You might want to look at an update to the Debian sid package (which like any sid package was out of date a week after it was compiled). I'm running sid and I had to complile from source. I have one question: How do I get an Icon for the Trash on there? Thanks and thanks for an awesome app!

About the trash, that's a special icon so at the moment there is no support for it yet.

I'll add support for it later.

How do you like Plasma 5?
     The best KDE Desktop ever.
     Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
