Description:

KSmoothDock is a cool desktop panel (like KDE's kicker) for KDE 3.2 and above with smooth zooming (2 modes: normal and parabolic). Its aim is to provide a cool alternative/complement to kicker. As it is intended for KDE/Linux, its behaviour will be like that of kicker.
- Programming language: C++
- Libraries used: KDE 3.2 (or above)

Hope it will be useful for you!

---------------------------------------
NOTE***:

It seems that automake-1.9 is not backward compatible with automake-1.7, so please upgrade to automake-1.9 before you compile KSmoothDock. To check the version of automake on your system, run:
automake --version

TO INSTALL: Unzip, cd to the directory ksmoothdock then run:
./configure
make
su
make install

Then run:
ksmoothdock

(if when you run "ksmoothdock", nothing happens, then it is likely that your KDE dir is not standard. In this case, either:
- cd to the directory ksmoothdock/src, then run "./ksmoothdock", or
- Re-do the above sequence (./configure ...), but instead of "./configure", type:
./configure --prefix=/YOUR_KDE_DIR
)

IF YOU BUILD ANY BINARY PACKAGE: please send it to me, thanks.

BUG REPORT & FEATURE REQUEST & PATCH & TRANSLATION GUIDE (INTERNATIONALISATION): Please visit KSmoothDock's homepage:
http://ksmoothdock.sourceforge.net/

SCREENSHOTS: normal zoom mode and parabolic zoom mode (#1), config dialog (#2), quick launchers editor (#3)

Short FAQ:
----------
1. System tray? I will implement this feature very soon.

2. Drag-and-drop? I will implement this very soon.

3. Real transparency? I will implement this when the technology (XGl or any other) becomes more mature, stable and widely used. At the moment, it is not so yet.

DANG Viet D(z)ung

Changelog:

v4.5:
New features:
- New command line options:
--resetConfig reset configuration data
--resetLaunchers reset quick launchers data

Bug fixes:
- Fixed some display bugs (on both normal and parabolic zoom modes) in v4.4.

v4.4:
- Parabolic zoom mode now works correctly under latest KDE releases.

v4.3:
New features:
- The "auto-hiding" feature has been re-implemented
- Added right-click popup menu for pager, taskbar (re-added) and clock
- Dock Position Conflict Dialog: added an option not to show it again

Other changes:
- The range of icon sizes have been increased
- Desktop icon area is now adjusted correctly
- Some other minor fixes.

v4.2:

New features:
- The Parabolic Zoom mode has been considerably improved.
- A task that demands attention now has better blinking notification.

Bug fix:
- The dock now does not steal mouse/keyboard focus when being zoomed in
- Fixed other minor bugs.

Other changes:
- The popup menu of a task button has been removed, because while it is of little use, it has problems with the parabolic zoom's animation.

v4.1:

New feature:
- Blink a task's icon when it demands attention

Some minor optimisations

Fixed the following bug:
- Option "Show windows from all desktops": "off" does not function properly

v4.0.1:

New feature:
- Add a separator between the launchers and the taskbar when the pager is not shown.

Fixed the following bugs:
- Normal zoom mode, LEFT or RIGHT position : the dock does not highlight the launcher on click acknowledgement.
- Normal zoom mode: a tiny part of the dock is not updated correctly.
- Parabolic zoom mode, LEFT position: drawing bug.
- Parabolic zoom mode: mouse click still works outside the visible area of the dock.
- About dialog: some text corrected.

v4.0: Redesign and rewrite the program from scratch. Thus it should now run better overall and is easier to maintain (fix bugs, implement new features...) than previous versions.

New features:
- POSITION SETTING: now the dock can be set to one of four positions on the screen: TOP, BOTTOM, LEFT, RIGHT.
- Switch zoom mode now does not require restarting the dock.
- Left click on the clock now shows the calendar.
- Add a "create a new link to folder" button in Edit Quick Launch Menu dialog.

Bug fix:
- The pager now displays mini-wallpapers correctly when the dock starts.
- Fixed other minor bugs.

 Placement

 by industrie13 on: Jun 20 2006

Score 50%

KSmoothdoock is really the best working dock for Linux I've seen so far. The only feature I miss at the moment is the possibility to place it at the top of the screen (or left or right). I think, this could increase its flexibility enormousely ;).
But however, great work!!! Keep up this way! ;)

 xgl/compiz?

Does this use real transparency with xgl/compiz? If not, is it planned?

It's still fake transparency at the moment.

I want to implement real transparency, but only when the technology is mature and it is popular. At the moment, few people use xgl/compiz or composite... so I do not consider it yet.

Best,

 background

Is there any way to configure the dock's background? Or to even get rid of it completely? I really love this dock. It is much simpler to configure than kxdocker, but not quite as many options as kxdocker. But yeah, is there any way to change the background? I would like to make its corners rounded.

I am considering implementing a background option or even a theme option. I'll try to do it after finishing essential stuffs. In the mean time, if you have any advice on this (e.g. how to organise a theme's background pictures), please email me.

Thanks,
Viet Dung

As I have posted here several times, I understand that a tray is necessary, however, at the moment, I don't know how to do it yet. I will implement it as soon as I know how to do it.

Perhaps you could use kdocker in the meantime?

kdocker only allows you to dock apps into kicker's system tray. It is not a replacement for the system tray itself.

 Add applet....

Thanks for the fine tool. :D
Many of us use multiple desktops, is there any method to run an applet that would allow one to choose which desktop to use? Only alternative is to open desktop previewer panel and choose that way.
PS - great news about the work on the placement options.

Hi,

Have you ever tried clicking in the tiny desktop wallpaper (desktop selector) in KSmoothDock? ;)

Cheers,

I don't see that, nor in pref's. Is it added via the edit menu?

Of course, it is in the Preference (also initial settings). The option is called "Show Pager", obviously.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
