Description:

Inspired by netgo. NG stands for "next generation".
A Qt based gui for wire-bound and wireless network. A tool for traveling users who have to set up there laptop to different network environments

I have uploaded the blank language file. Maybe someone likes to translate the application to another language ...

A courtesy by Harry Auschner I can now provide a package for Debian.
Created with Debian (Version 0.2.1)(Thanks Harry - once more - thank you)

Changelog:

0.2.2 Made a package for OpenSuSE 11.1 and fixed a problem with iwconfig.

0.2.2 I have encountered problems with the dhcp setup using OpenSuSE 11.X. Though I made a few changes to fix the problem. DHCP Setup should now work fine.

0.2.1 NetGo now speaks brasilian. Thanks to Márcio Moraes. The debian package is also available now. Thanks to Harry.

0.2.0 When changing from a WPA encrypted Network to an Ad-Hoc network without encryption the wpa_supplicant was still active. Fix this and did some changes to the wifi-setup as well.

0.1.9 I found an error in the root-check routine. When the program was invoked as normal user the program calls kdesu to restart the program as root. But by doing so all the commandline options got lost. I fixed the problem and now even invoked as normal user the commandline options are passed over to kdesu.

0.1.8 The switch --start "profilename" was added. When invoked with this parameter the application starts automaticaly this network profile. Some minor improvements are made to the wifi setup.

0.1.7 Now you can invoke the application with --disablerootcheck to disable check for root privilegs (but root privilegs are still needed), --disabletrayicon (for distros who no longer use kicker). The application runs without a tray icon.
Debian Package is also available now (thanks to Harry Auscher)

0.1.6 Made some changes to the wireless setup (e.g. added mode for no encryption) - (edit) The Debian Version is also now available - Thanks Harry.

0.1.5 Changes made to the wireless configuration. Made some minor bug-fixes. The language files now part of the project and will now be installed by the installer (source and rpm). I am still looking for someone to translate the language file to other languages. :-)

0.1.4 Some minor bug-fixes and implementation for multi language support. A german translation File is provided. Copy the file to /root/.netgo_ng/translations for german language.

0.1.3 Add a System tray icon. Now you can shut down all not used interfaces.

0.1.1 Fixed a problem with the dhcp configuration and added pre-start and post-start script support.

I couldn't install it because make command gives error. I'm using GCC 4.3.1 and KDE 3.5.9 on Pardus Linux.

Here is my ./configure and make command outputs. http://ogrenci.hacettepe.edu.tr/~artan05/CONF.txt

Strange. I have modified the soucecode again an hope it will compile now.
The error message during compilation indicates a missing include of stdlib.h.
I have added the required line into the sources.
Again, could you please gimme a short notice about the outcome .....

It seems there is a problem

It seems there is a problem with dhcpcd:

- Shutting down interface eth1 ....
- Setting up eth1 via iwconfig ....
- terminating existing dhcpcd .... if exist
- Setting up interface eth1 via dhcpcd .... timeout 30 sec.
usage: dhcpcd [-adknpEGHMNRSTY] [-c script] [-h hostname] [-i classID]
[-l leasetime] [-m metric] [-r ipaddress] [-s ipaddress]
[-t timeout] [-u userclass] [-F none | ptr | both]
[-I clientID] <interface>
- no IP address yet ..... backgrounding.

Please show me the content of /root/.netgo_ng/scripts/ipup.sh
Also I need the version of dhcpcd (dhcpcd --version)
I have tested my program even with eth1 and it worked fine. Maybe you have a different version of dhcpcd who has different parameters.
Thanks for your help.

I haven't got the file "/root/.netgo_ng/scripts/ipup.sh"

My dhcpcd version is "dhcpcd 3.2.3"
Compile time options: ARP DUID INFO RESOLVCONF

I think I found the problem.
My script calls dhcpcd with the options:
- -C (calculate checksum)
- -D (set domainname)
- -K (keep resolve.conf)

It seems you use a version of dhcpcd who dont support this switches. I don't know whether this options are realy used. I will test it out and if the dhcpcd works without them I will remove this options.
Stay tuned ..... :-)

Found a typo in wifisetup.h, line 23

Replace #include <qmultilinedit.h> with #include <qmultilineedit.h>

an it works !

Thank you for the information. On my system there is a qmultilinedit.h and a qmultilineedit.h and the program works with both libs. Don't now where the difference is but I think the later lib is the more appropriate.
Best regards.

 Looks great!

This looks great. I love KDE and all other wireless gui programs don't work for me.

My question is will this work with KDE 4.1? When I run it I get no tray icon (although there is a flash down there) and I get no terminal output.

I'd love to run this and I really hope it will work with KDE 4.

Thank you for your comment. I realy dont know whether this will work with KDE4 cause I am still working with KDE 3.5.x. But as soon as the KDE 4 (SuSE 11.X) is out in a stable version (SuSE 11.0 is notrealy stable for my taste) I will start to rewrite the code for KDE 4 / Qt 4.
Try to start the application with sudo. The program should do this for you but maybe there is a problem with it under KDE 4. Like to hear whether it worked or not.

Thanks for the fast reply. I tried running sudo netgo_ng and it tries to bring it up (something flashes for 1 second) and then goes away. I get no terminal output. If I look in System Activity I don't see the netgo_ng process. I am thinking maybe it is relying on kicker and that is no longer in KDE 4.

Any other ideas?

This app looks great and I'd love to try it out.

Yes it relies on kicker. I can only provied a strip down version without a icon at the panel. Without this it should run as a normal application.

That would be great if you could get me a standalone version. KDE 4 uses Plasma not Kicker. I'd love to have a tray icon but for now even just the app would be great.

I am using Sidux (based off Debian Sid) so a .deb would be great but I can also compile it.

Thanks a lot!

I can not provied a .deb package but you can download the modified sources at:

Hope it will work and met you requirements. Gimme a brief reply so I know whether it works or not.
Have a nice day.

Well I uninstalled the original deb I had tried. Then I compiled the new version. I rebooted and tried to run netgo_ng and it did not do anything. I also tried to run it with sudo and nothing. No flash this time and still no terminal output.

Any ideas?

You got the sources. Please open the file netgo_ng.cpp. There must be a line:
// #define _DEBUG
change this to #define DEBUG (remove the '// ') and compile and install it again.
I think then it might at least start up.

With the debug line you just disable the "root check". You still have to start the app with sudo. Otherwise it will not work.

This app does not support the connection to a network without any encryption. I thought that at least wep as encryption is uses in any way. But if you are in need to connect to unencrypted network I will add it to the program. Though let me now and I will put it in. :-)

I use wireless at my college a lot and they don't encrypt the wireless so that everyone can use it. It would be really nice to have a way to connect to unsecured connections.

Then you will be glad to hear that version 0.1.7 (now available for download) provieds this feature. You can now connect to network without encryption. Hope it works for you.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
