Description:

Simple plasmoid to run commands with support for runners.
Developed and tested on KDE 4.8 with Qt 4.7 (Kubuntu 11.10).

Features:
- optional use of runners;
- possibility to open web addresses (including searching, example: gg:query), invoke mailer, open directories and files (including use of KIO);
- possibility to run command in terminal (by prepending it by dollar sign - $);
- simple calculator (example: =2+2);
- simple numbers converter (to binary, octal and hexadecimal systems; examples: bin=12, oct=10, hex=8);
- commands to manage session (logout, lock, switch, shutdown, reboot);
- auto run of command after selecting;
- commands history shared with KRunner;
- activation shortcut.

If you have found bugs or have suggestions you can contact me via email, message or using comments, before you will vote bad. And remember that not everybody has enough time for fast replying. ;-)

Changelog:

2.5 (04.02.2012):
- fix resizing in KDE 4.8;
- some other fixes and small changes.

2.4 (04.01.2012):
- implement configChanged() method (useful for scripting);
- do not advertise resizing if panel toolbox is open.

I have the same problem of the last user. Text appears cutted.

Happens in 2 computers one of them with a fresh Arch Linux install
Any fix for this?

That's probably also related to this bug (wrong font size or something):
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=279446

I guess that they do nothing to fix it since probably nobody except of me is using it as editable control...
When I'll finally have some free time then I'll try to fix it myself and send patch upstream (won't be first time when I'm fighting with that widget, but since then they switched from SVN to GIT...) or try to poke them to at least confirm these issues.

Works fine. Folks who for whatever reason never touch krunner may well appreciate an applet alternative.

One quick comment: I might prefer an icon on the panel which I click to get the text box, maybe above it (extender?). No cursor shows in this text box and also, there is very little frame right click area for configs. You have no route to runner options at all that I can see and should probably implement in a future version (lift krunner's code).

I have a recoll-runner. The new version will have an (alternative) action. This icon did not show up in your applet. I also have an interface to the runner's configuration via createRunOptions which you do implement (please don't shoot or flame, plasma developer folks--this is a search runner so quicker access to tweaking is in order.) You give me the expected button-box with a message that the config dialog is already running or to that effect. My (admit: bastardized) config dialog access uses the standard KCMultiDialog.addModule which should be safe not be "busy." Works in krunner and I can use the changed configuration by simply deleting and or typing one character rather than starting over.

Applet doesn't change cursor, so this might be bug elsewhere.
Yes, but it's still better than for example color picker applet. ;-)
Anyway, for next version configuration will be finally moved to input's context menu.

It's not decided yet (there is TODO entry), currently applet shares history and settings (at least some) with KRunner.

Could you prepare video (using RecordMyDesktop or similar tool) showing how it behaves in KRunner and this applet (I don't use indexing software, search option of KFileReplace is enough for me ;-))?

What textbox are you using? Text colors and entry options are strange, text does not really show up (white on white?) and again, no cursor in box--nothing to do with screen cursor.

I cannot get to my properties box because this is "owned" by krunner. If I kill krunner, it works just fine. Really "sharing" resources with krunner will be mighty tricky if it can be done at all. So an interface to runner properties dialogs will not work either.)

Actions need be explicitly drawn in your widgets but they are likely "owned" by krunner as well.

To really coexist and share, one probably needs access to krunner's display widget and put that one itself up from the plasmoid. Can it be done?? Yours has its strengths, however. I like the tooltips (krunner would not let me do that!) and having item icons only show on the focused widget is a lot cleaner.

This is standard Plasma::ComboBox widget using KHistoryComboBox.
So these bugs belongs there (for sure these caused by wrong widget drawing), wrong colors were already reported:

Applet only shares some configuration options, currently only PastQueries entry (commands history).
Common parts are provided by kdelibs.

No, dialog can't be shared, I would need to redo it and update when something is changed in KRunner.
Current results dialog is very simple, it uses QWidget based elements, no QGraphicsView etc.

For the non-showing text, it is simply being shown (in my white on black plasma theme, but the combo-box text input background is white!) as a brighter white. You may need to set more palette items, maybe the bright text.

I used your palette code to set up my new menu, needed a button color of gray (but would be better some function of the plasma one--your "lighter" did not work.

 ComboBox Text Colors, etc.

Score 50%

To get rid of the bright white on white, I can to change both the m_comboBox windowtext (for the >) and the text colors to black. This also changed the history text color. So if I set the backgrounds to the plasma default (oxygen), the history becomes black on black. Fun--I do not know which parameter gives that history background gray on my plasma (only gray I see is the buttonbackground of the theme!).

Oxygen default text colors are bright white, apparently (and black for buttontext).

A more-correct work-around might be to set to the inverted color of the background (how?). Or maybe get away with not using the plasma::combobox at all and setting the m_comboBox palette from the plasma theme explicitly (or from the parent widget). Or KComboBox instead of Q?

BTW, the busy problem of my runner's config dialog was solved by making sure deleteLater was called when closing. I thought C++ itself would handle that but I guess C++ is not Java :-)

OK, quick-fixes enable me to see the text, that is, half of it. Problem is that the KHistoryComboBox hides parameters that could fix a lot of this.

Right now, the bottom half of (the lower) line of text, i.e. descenders, "g," is cut off. I tried setting margins and such, no help. This occurs on the input box and on the paths in the listbox. Listboxes can have variable heights, not KHistoryCombo... Krunner's widget will often show everything beautifully but sometimes will not expand the item heights but simply cut off the end of the text. The plasmoid's listbox shows 1 1/2 lines always.

Yep, I've already checked that in source of Plasma::ComboBox and it seems to be theirs bug, painting is simply redirected, or something like that. Maybe rectangle is wrong somewhere so it gets sometimes cut (more or less, probably depends on font settings etc.).

Quote:

Which one, results or completion box or history box?
I can only change behavior of first one, but this is hard, I've tried already some techniques in the past...
These two other probably should be replaced later with custom widget (maybe with additional goodies, like entry icon etc.).

I also think that this should be "global" thing (and I say that for many years, this is one of the best features of KDE3 still not available), that is why I was so reluctant. ;-)

Currently the best way to do that would be to add kind of flag, applets that want to support resizing would set it (like in the past they would need to register to get configuration interface). Then if the flag would be set Plasma would draw handles and pass signals to applet.
Maybe this is not needed but after eight major releases it might be required to not break existing stuff.

Some applets are supposed to stretch to all available space, for example most of tasks applets.

But since this year it is again possible to set width for it, this time in less ugly way, by dragging edges of applet when desktop is unlocked.

Please forward that information to forums. :-)

I would like to see that way implemented upstream, so applets with can have variable size in panel could use it when they wish to.

It seems that if I remove, compile and then reinstall (or maybe just reinstall) it will maybe work once but then it jut freezes when clicked.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
