Updated:  Nov 1 2013

Description:

Plasmoid to show date and time in adjustable format using rich text.
Developed and tested on KDE 4.11 with Qt 4.8 (Kubuntu 13.10).

Source (main repository, with more frequent updates) is located at:
https://github.com/Emdek/plasmoid-adjustable-clock

Warning!
Version 4.0 (and newer) is not backwards compatible with 3.x, all custom formats need to be exported and manually converted.

QML themes support is currently considered as experimental, behavior and available API are not yet stable and most probably will be changed with next release.

Tips:
- to change tool tip text you need to set options toolTipExpressionMain and toolTipExpressionSub in applets configuration file (usually located at ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc), in group containing line plugin=adjustableclock;
- you can use advanced WebKit features (all of these that work with for example rekonq should work here too), for example use CSS to create reflections:

-webkit-box-reflect:below 5px -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(transparent), color-stop(0.5, transparent), to(white));

And much more. ;-)

If you created interesting theme and want to share it then post in comments!

Features:
- fully custom date and time using JavaScript API to obtain date and time components;
- multiple clock themes utilizing various designs;
- possibility to use rich text editor or edit source directly (HTML and CSS or QML) to adjust theme;
- context menu with actions to copy formatted (adjustable expressions) date and time to clipboard;
- fast copy to clipboard of adjustable date and time expression after middle mouse click on the clock or activation of keyboard shortcut;
- adjustable tool tip (hidden option, toolTipExpressionMain and toolTipExpressionSub keys);
- standard clock calendar.

If you have found bugs or have suggestions you can contact me via email, message or using comments, before you will vote bad. And remember that not everybody has enough time for fast replying. ;-)

Changelog:

4.1.4 (01.11.2013):
- fixed week number not being updated;
- added missing title of "Insert Component" dialog.

4.1.3 (27.09.2013):
- ensure that component values are always up to date;
- adjust timestamp for time zone offset;
- do not allow for accidental nesting of components in editor;
- added option to hide date in Train Clock theme;
- added workaround to ensure that hands of SVG Clock have correct initial positions as soon as possible.

4.1.2 (01.06.2013):
- ensure that center of SVG Clock theme is always valid;
- improve resizing in vertical panels.

4.1.1 (25.05.2013):
- fixed WYSIWYG editor for HTML themes;
- fixed missing dialog for "Insert Component" actions.

4.1 (15.05.2013):
- added SVG Clock theme (analog clock that uses Plasma theme);
- added experimental support for QML themes (alpha state);
- added simple file templates for new themes;
- move theme editor to own dialog;
- move theme specific actions to context menu;
- added ability to install and export themes (Plasma Package ZIP);
- some other improvements and fixes.

 2.1 = frozen clock/working tip

 by FrozenFox on: Jul 2 2009

Score 50%

2.0 worked fine other than the seconds being stuck and annoying resize problems, but for 2.1 the clock itself is stuck in the panel. It won't change after whatever time is set when I log in. Oddly though, the tooltip seems to be correct.

http://paste.ubuntu.com/207773/plain/

I've pasted the main settings here if that will be helpful to you.

Further information if necessary: I'm running Arch, up to date, i686, using the Arch testing repository and running KDEMod Testing (4.3 rc1 / 4.2.95).

It's possible that it's specific to 4.3 RC, some other applets also don't repaint for me, for example YaWP and System Load Viewer but for example System Monitor works good...
I'll try to find reason.

If you add id="clock" to the element with the clock text it gets updated.

Like this:
<div id="clock">%H:%M:%S %d.%m.%Y</div>

ihave a new problem:
changing the font, size, B/I/U is reflected in the 'source' tab but the display is not actually changed. the preset examples work though.

in other words, the new config dialog is nice, but it doesn't actually work yet (for me).

i'm on opensuse 11.1 x86_64

Try this code (with BR tag instead new line):
<div style="text-align:right;white-space:pre;font-weight:bold;margin:3px;font-family:Liberation-sans;font-size:12pt; font-weight:600;">%X<br>%a %b %e %Y</div>

Probably there is problem with new lines, I'll try to do something with this in new version, for now I recommend to use BR tag.

Check if that code works in plasmoidviewer.
Run plasmoidviewer adjustableclock, paste code in source tab and check if it updates.

Maybe it would work for you with packages for RC if your distribution prepared them already.

This could be something in KDE or Qt (applet uses directly WebKit classes from Qt).
I'm using KDE 4.3 RC and Qt 4.5.2 and sometimes after login some of applets are also frozen and my bottom panel is displayed in two places and it also happens completely random. ;-)
So probably we need to wait for final version...

 Crash with KDE SC 4.4.2

I have the same problem with Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 with KDE SC 4.4.2 and the 2.2 version of your (fantastic) clock: Every time I close the clock's settings the whole plasma desktop crashes. So there is no way of adjusting anything and I'm stuck with a mini standard clock on my desktop instead of a beautiful adjustable clock.

It's compiled from source or installed from package?

Try to install it from source, crashes could be caused by changes in libplasmaclock.
Otherwise if you have backtrace then you can upload it somewhere and put link in comment, then I'll find crash reason.

Yes, that's package fault, it should be updated when updating workspace libraries package as applet needs to depend on one of it's libraries with still has no binary compatibility guarantee, so every time it changes applet should be recompiled too.

i am not sure if you are aware so i thought i'd mention that freezing of the clock still occurs when making changes to how it is displayed.
KDE 4.3.65
Qt 4.5

maybe i should try upgrading to Qt 4.6?

Hmm, I think that we need to do some tests using qDebug(). I need to know where it fails, on data update or painting...
Could you add debug class in methods dataUpdated and paintInterface and then run plasmoidviewer or full plasma-desktop in terminal and check what it prints?
One line similar to this for first method:
qDebug() << "data updated:" << m_dateTime;

And for second:
qDebug() << "paint requested:" << m_dateTime;

Both should be called two times for each update so they will probably produce a lot of output (you can then paste part of it to kind of paste bin).
And could you please show example format that makes it freeze?
And clock works normally with that new format after restart of desktop?

Simply add these lines somewhere in corresponding methods (for example as first line after { in each one), recompile applet and try to reproduce that bug for example using plasmoidviewer adjustableclock run from terminal. If after freeze it is updated correctly (debug output in terminal keeps updating with "fresh" time stamps) then we will need to check what is inside variable containing time format, maybe it gets broken somehow...

Or better, here you have AdjustableClock.cpp with added debug code:

In Debian, for plasma-widget-adjustableclock_2.1 requires kdebase-workspace-libs4+5,
but (Debian unstable) KDE4.3, had no deb package kdebase-workspace-libs4+5.
Therefore, KDE4.3 is not possible to install plasma-widget-adjustableclock
In Debian, KDE4.3 is only in unstable

Applet should work with 4.2 too, it only needs Qt 4.5 because of WebKit.
Maybe there is somewhere package created for Debian?

Starting from this version clock attempts to preserve set of default formats so if you modified them without changing format name then they could be lost! Create format backup first.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
