 And few more issues

 by dec0ding on: Mar 27 2006

Well I am a bit dissapointed. I expected the system:/media/ issue to get its resolution, but it is yet not resolved. Not sure why, as there is really and easy way to solve it (amarok has the same bug/problem/issue too), and it really makes the users not being able to play files from, i.e. hdc partition when it is accessed from system:/media/hdc/, but instead, kaffeine goes with Copying the file to /tmp and then playing...wtf? 600 MB of file started from CD to get copied to the disk and they run? No way...no user wants this...

Then, the double-click fullscreen thing. I don't know if it is by mean or bug, but when you are in the Start tab (where the start buttons are), and you double-click above the buttons, you get fullscreen...not good idea if it is made with purpose...

The new Tab thing...I don't like it neither in Kaffeine neither in amaroK.

So, all in all, Kaffeine is the best application there (xine-ui is great too since it has Skinning possiblity along its functionality that is implemented in Kaffeine anyways), but not as good as the end-user would get used to it right away.

Next...I did an experiment, run Kanotix Linux, KDE 3.5.1, where Kay is implemented. Kay says "New Audio CD Inserted...". The user, which is my end-user girlfriend :) pressed "Play the CD with kaffeine", Kaffeine asks for /dev/ where it can read the content of the Audio CD. Bad bad...it could be Kay problem, not sure.

And this is some Futurama-like question and proposal, is it possible to make Kaffeine scriptable in near future? That'd be great. In VLC, not that I adore the player itself, but there is Skin database which makes it look fancier. Users like that...

I hope you won't get me wrong, I am just user that adores what you do, and encourage you to go on with this good job. In case you read this, just let me know, or I can send it via mail to the author(s), since I think it might be important info on how users in my area look at Kaffeine at first and its ++ and -- sides.

I have thought that system:// copy bug is KDE related and not a applications what use it.

Because thats reason why i cant use system:/ to save files to moveable drivers or others because application says it cant save there...

KDE it just must be...

Certain KDE applications can't get the system:/ slave to work properly yeah. Like, if I want to choose wallpaper on system:/media/hdc/folder/file.png, it'd send warning that I can select _only_ local files

This all situation can result into chaos...

 New "side" tabs

Where do I sign in for "put the tabs back on top and make them look like tabs again" club.

I don't like any kind of tabs in a media player, but "parallel" feel of tabs in pre-8 Kaffeine just made more sence to me.

See comment by dec0ding on 03/27/2006 for a fix. Worked for me when I ran into the same problem.

Do not understand. He apparently had a successful compile to critique.

Sorry...he had an earlier post also.

"In two files you have put qapp.h, It made errors, can't find the header, so I presume you have mixed the qApp pointer with the qapplication.h, and I changed the qapp.h #include in paranoia.cpp and cdda.cpp into qapplication.h, and now it works...

Also you should point out that there is dependency on libparanoia dev files.."

May not be the same error you are getting but sounds similar. Anyway, this worked for me. :)

There are two of these: libcdio-paranoia-dev and libcdparanoia-dev. I installed them and the compile is progressing.

 New version

I'm also a little disappointed with the new version.

First, I preferred the tabs along the top.
Also, reversing the mouse wheel is just confusing.
If some people want these changes could they at least be made options?

I do like how the navigator shows in fullscreen when you touch the bottom of the screen, but it would be better if the picture wasn't resized, I don't think this is necessary.

 Much much faster

by Haiyadragon on: Apr 4 2006

This version is much much faster then the 0.7* releases. I made a desperate move to Kmplayer and even Gnome (Totem) because of the slowness. Now I can come back. The tab thingies are good.

The reverse mouse wheel and picture resizing on toolbar are features that should be reconsidered.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
