* Mounting and unmounting of shares (using the KAuth framework)
* Access to the files of a mounted share using a file manager or terminal
* Auto-detection of external mounts and unmounts
* Remounting of previously used shares on program start
* Miscellaneous infos about remote network items and mounted shares
* Network search
* WINS server support
* Preview of the contents of a share
* Several methods to look up the initial list of workgroups and domains
* Default login
* Special handling of homes shares
* Ability to bookmark favorite shares and organize them in groups
* System tray widget
* Support of advanced Samba options
* Support of printer shares
* KWallet support
* Synchronization of a remote share with a local copy and vice versa
* Ability to define custom options for individual servers and shares
* Laptop support through the Solid hardware device framework
* Wake-On-LAN capabilities
* Plasmoid for desktop integration

 CIFS

 by damjan on: Aug 30 2004

Score 50%

All modern Linux desktops now, should use the CIFS fs to mount remote windows shares. CIFS is much better than the old SMBFS filesystem and is supported in all windows versions >= win-2000.

For me, one of the main features CIFS has, is the support for Unicode-over-the-wire. That means that filenames are un-ambiguously transffered from the server to the client.

CIFS is also supported in the 2.6 kernel versions without patching.

Unfourtunately smb4k is hardcoded to use only the smbfs filesystem, can you make it configurable, please?

I put CIFS support on the TODO list. Maybe you'll see it already in the next major release.

I'm sorry about that. There was a coding error introduced by a last-minute change I made. The problem is solved now and you can re-download the package.

 RPC against RAP

 by damjan on: Nov 10 2004

Score 50%

I've recently come to an limitation in smb4k. It would not show shares that have more than 12 characters. Researching the problem I've found that smbclient too doesn't show these shares... but the new samba3 command "net share" shows them.

The conclusion is that smb4k and smbclient use the old RAP protocol that has a limit to 12 character shares, while the "net" tool can use the newer RPC protocol that doesn't have this limit.

Can you modify smb4k to use RPC for browsing? Or, perhaps it can autodetect the protocol (net does that).

Support of the net command will be implemented, but I'm not sure when. There are still lots of other equally important things on the list.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
