 A simple question

by rogun on: Mar 7 2008

This is a wonderful app, but I have one simple question. Should shares be unmounted before suspending or shutting down? Is it safe to suspend and/or shutdown the computer without unmounting first?

Thanks!

I haven't tried Smb4K on a laptop yet, so I cannot answer this question extensively, but from what I heard from our users, it seems there are some issues with hibernation and suspend. So, I recommend that you unmount the shares before you suspend or hibernate your laptop.

Laptop support will be included in Smb4K at some point in the future.

 smb4k & KDE4

Hi debian/kubuntu guys !!!
If, like me, you can't wait a stable release for KDE4, use my smb4k CVS snapshot.

KDE4 version lacks some features but works good (mounting/unmounting shares is perfect !!!!).

If you want to try:

deb http://ansani.it/debian/ experimental contrib
deb-src http://ansani.it/debian/ experimental contrib

Bye,
Salvatore

It seems smb4kdialogs is not linked against the KIO libraries. Sorry! This will be fixed in 0.10.1.

In the meantime, please add ${KDE4_KIO_LIBS} to the target_link_libraries() statement in smb4k-0.10.0/smb4k/dialogs/CMakeLists.txt. It should then look similar to this:

target_link_libraries( smb4kdialogs
${KDE4_KDECORE_LIBS}
smb4kcore
${KDE4_KDEUI_LIBS}
${KDE4_KIO_LIBS} )

If you have additional problems, please post them here as well.

the same error msg occured at:

[ 64%] Building CXX object smb4k/configdlg/CMakeFiles/smb4kconfigdialog.dir/smb4kuserinterfaceoptions.o
Linking CXX shared module ../../lib/libsmb4kconfigdialog.so
CMakeFiles/smb4kconfigdialog.dir/smb4kconfigdialog.o: In function `Smb4KConfigDialog::checkSettings()':
smb4kconfigdialog.cpp:(.text+0x1672): undefined reference to `KUrlRequester::staticMetaObject'
...
...
...

adding the same line smb4k-0.10.0/smb4k/configdlg/CMakeLists.txt solved it and i managed to compile and install it ..

one thing i notice is that the mouse cursor blinks when on top of smb4k main window..when the shaking starts after the the program is started but it goes away after a while ..i have closed and restarted it couple of times and it seems to be gone now

there seem to be problems with mounting

kde3's smb4k created a remote system folder if it doesnt exist when trying to mount a network share on the local file system ..this version of smb4k just fails with the following error msg:

The directory "/home/i686/kdi(I18N_ARGUMENT_MISSING)" could not be created.

if i create the local folder before attempting to mount, the mout succeeds but i get the following error msg:

The share "//KDI/ink(I18N_ARGUMENT_MISSING)" could not be mounted.
Read the error message under "Details" to find out more.

details show:
mount error: permission denied or not superuser and mount.cifs not installed SUID

scrap all i have said above about mounting problems as i was trying to mount to an area i didnt have writing access to ..but there seem to be mounting issues ..this is what i am getting when trying to mount to areas i have write access to

step1:
configure smb4k to mount remote shares in home directory to make sure i have write access

step2:
attempt to mount a network share in home directory ..an error msg shows up with the following text:
The share "//KDI/ink(I18N_ARGUMENT_MISSING)" could not be mounted.
Read the error message under "Details" to find out more.

details says:
mount error: permission denied or not superuser and mount.cifs not installed SUID

but the share mounts with the error msg above ..

trying to unmount and
1: there is no option to unmount when right clicking on the mounted folder in the network neighborhood tab

2. there are options to "mount" and "mount manually" ..i dont see why these options will be there on an already mounted share

to unmount, i have to go to "mounted share tab" ..right clicking and choosing "unmount" unmounts the share

the above problem seem to show up when i start smb4k from my kde4 account but it not there in my normal account ..i have no idea what could cause the problem ..if it makes any different, i accessed my kde4 account from my normal account through ssh but i dont see how this could cause any issues ..

anothing think i notices is that smb4k starts up in "mounted shares" tab..wouldnt it be better to have it start at "network neighborhood tab"?
another observation: when

Could you please tell me what distribution you are using? I cannot reproduce your mount problem.

You can unmount the shares from the "Mounted Shares" tab. An unmount action in the network neighborhood browser seems not logical and I rather won't implement it.

When Smb4K starts, the last used tab is shown. Maybe we should make that configurable.

I fixed the missing link directive. However I could not reproduce your problems when mounting a share... Could you please provide additional information? Have you set up Samba before using Smb4K? Which locale are you using? etc. ...

 DBus error, won't start!

 by nos4ah2 on: Oct 11 2008

Score 50%

I have no problems or errors compiling or installing, it all seems to work correctly.

However, when I start the program, I get an entry in the task bar that just sort of sits there for a moment, but nothing in the system tray. After approximately 30 seconds, the taskbar entry vanishes and it's pretty obvious the program has crashed. I tried starting it from the command line, and I get the following output:

<unknown program name>(21160)/: Communication problem with"smb4k" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you are using 0.10.0: I just discovered and fixed a bug that caused Smb4K to enter an infinite loop when custom options were defined. If you suffer from this bug I suggest that you remove the ~/.kde4/share/apps/smb4k/custom_options.xml file and also disable the "Remount shares on start-up" feature until version 0.10.1 is out. It will be released very soon.

Btw, I'm running Intrepid with KDE 4.1.2 and SMB4k 0.10.0.

I did have Remount shares on startup selected. I look forward to the next revision!

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
