Description:

!!! KWireless renamed to KWlanInfo !!!
A renaming of kwireless was necessary to avoid an name conflict with kdenetwork3-kwireless.

KWlanInfo provides some information about wlan interfaces.

It's a kicker applet and so you must start it with a right click on a empty space in the kicker panel and then add it. At time it only works proper, if the wlan interface is set to "managed" mode (Access point).

Meanwhile it's tested with many wlan cards and distributions, but some wlan drivers do not set wlan statistics proper and so you get wrong data displayed.

Changelog:

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Attention!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KWireless renamed because there's a conflict with a standard kwireless-applet in KDE. The new name is now KWlanInfo
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

0.9.4
Improvements:
- Opening info window does not appear in taskbar
- Min/Max indicators on bars in info window to see best and worst values of a connection
- Tooltip window for each bar shows full bar name and level (usefull if bar text to small or truncated)

0.9.3
Errors removed:
- Header files missing on some systems
- Nickname and ESSID on some systems not correctly displayed or kwlaninfo crashed

0.9.2
Error removed:
- Nickname and ESSID sometimes not updated

0.9.1
Errors removed:
- Header file error (wireless.h not found on some systems)
- Bars in info window have now the same colors like bars in applet

Behavior improved:
- info window on mouse over event now always on top
- if text to big for bar view, it will be truncated and not removed like in older versions

0.9.0b
Reimplementation of some code:
There are no longer depencies to any extern files or programs (e.g. /proc/net/wireless, ifconfig ...).

0.8.3
Some compilation errors, program crashes on newer systems (KDE 3.2 + gcc 3.3) removed. Sorry, inadvertance of the programmer ;-)).

0.8.2
All regular expressions in QString changed to standard string functions, so you should be able to compile kwlaninfo with Qt >= 3.x
Following bug in KDE-3.2 fixed: info window shown in klwaninfo applet widget

0.8.1
Size of kwlaninfo now configurable. You can choose following modes (preferences dialog):
normal: ratio height:width = 1:2
condensed: ratio height:width = 1:1
ultra condensed: ratio height:width = 2:1

You can now choose when info bar shall be visible. Following modes are availible (preferences dialog):
Mouseover: info bar will be visible if you move mouse pointer over kwlaninfo
Double Click: info bar is visible on a double click on kwlaninfo
(in both modes info bar is hidden if mouse pointer leaves kwlaninfo)

infobar shows graphical signal strength too

bar text will be removed if it's to big for the view

type selection in preferences dialog removed

0.8
KWlanInfo applet still runs even of missing or removing wlan card.
In this case it displays an error and in a tooltip (mouse over kwlaninfo applet) it shows an error message.
If card will be inserted it shows the normal bar view again.

0.7.2
Redesign of the source code
IP address in info window added
Danish translation added (thanks to the translator "Frederik Dannemare")

0.7.1
Compiling error using qt version < 3.2 removed
Compiling of kwireless requires now only qt version >= 3.1

0.7:
Info window shows now wlan settings like ESSID, Access Point ...
German translation included.
Following bug removed:
The info window was possibly not displayed correct (out of screen), if kicker panel or kwireless changed their position. Now the position of info window is correctly calculated.

0.6-release-2:
An error occurs while opening preferences in Version 0.6. Now opening preferences works correct.
Further you need Qt Version 3.2.3 or higher.

0.6:
"Type" in preferences dialog is reserved for future use.
Customizing of kwireless improved (see preferences dialog).
Following features added:
- setting of font and font color
- setting own bar colors for different levels.
- setting level values for changing the bar colors

0.6-pre:
Calculation of bar text size improved. On mouseEnter event a info window is shown.

0.5.1:
While setting up preferences first time the "Procfile" value was empty. Now it's initial value is set to "/proc/net/wireless"

 a few probs

Ok, see if you can make sense of this... I can compile and run no prob with 0.5,0.5.1, if i comment out two lines on 0.06-pre and 0.06 i can get them to compile and work(lines 53-54), i can compile 0.7 if i comment out the same lines, and i can get 0.7.1 to compile just fine. But with 0.7 and 0.7.1 the signal bar takes up the whole applet and the info box that is supposed to pop up only pops up a portion of it inside the applet itself. perhaps i'm doing something wrong, if i am, please let me know, thank you =)

really nice app.

though, with the 0.7 versions the preference window pops-up every time the applet starts, in other words every time kde starts.

keep up the good work!

That's a strange behavior. Please look for the file "~/.kde/share/config/kwirelessrc". If it doesn't exist, please create one with "touch ~/.kde/share/config/kwirelessrc" and try it again.

 missing file ?

 by emanuele75 on: Feb 15 2004

Score 50%

Trying to build 0.7.2 but it fails because it can't find file "kwinfo.moc".
It complains from "kwinfo.cpp" which has an number include directive as the last line of its code.

I have Qt-3.2.3 and Kde-3.2 if that makes any difference in a case of a file not found ;-)

Exact error:
kwinfo.cpp:53:22: kwinfo.moc: No such file or directory
make[2]: *** [kwinfo.lo] Error 1

It seems there's no moc compiler on your system. Please take a look of the output of ./configure. There's a line like "checking for moc...". If there's no you must install moc.

checking for Qt... libraries /opt/qt-3.2.3/lib, headers /opt/qt-3.2.3/include using -mt
checking if Qt compiles without flags... no
checking for moc... /opt/qt-3.2.3/bin/moc
checking for uic... /opt/qt-3.2.3/bin/uic

It looks like moc is properly detected by the configure script.
The path include the /opt/qt-3.2.3/bin directory and the configure script does not complain about it.

I had to run aclocal, configure, make before getting it to work properly

It works now

 Seg fault

by klintarg on: Mar 1 2004

Score 50%

I got the app compiled and running ok, but whenever I try to open the info window, it segfaults. It seems to be a threading error since it is crashing in the pthreads library. Here is the backtrace reported:

many no debugging symbols found errors
[New Thread 16384 (LWP 20339)]

0x40fbe0e8 in waitpid () from /lib/libpthread.so.0
#0 0x40fbe0e8 in waitpid () from /lib/libpthread.so.0
#1 0x407d6154 in __JCR_LIST__ () from /usr/kde/3.2/lib/libkdecore.so.4

I will try to compile it with debugging symbols enabled to see if I can further clarify the segfault.

I am running Gentoo with KDE 3.2

Look to the Homepage auf kwlaninfo (www.ph-home.de/opensource/kde3/kwlaninfo). There are some patches which could solve this problem.

Another reason for seg fault could be that following commands are not placed in:
a) iwconfig -> /usr/sbin/
b) ifconfig -> /sbin/
If these command are somewhere else make just a link to them in this directories

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
