Description:

K3b is a full-featured CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burning and ripping application.
It supports a variety of project types as well as copying of optical media, burning if different types of images, and ripping Audio CDs, Video CDs, and Video DVDs.
Its convenient user interface is targetted at all audiences, trying to be as simple as possible for novice users while also providing all features and advanced user might need.

Changelog:

K3b 2.0 marks the last milestone in the effort to port one of the most popular disk recording applications to KDE's current Platform 4. Although some parts still use legacy libraries, the application takes advantage of the new platform and integrates better with it. Solid, the KDE hardware layer, is now used for hardware detection.

On the interface front K3b 2.0 is a direct port of its KDE3 predecessor. The overall look remains the same but it now uses modern widgets. For example, file browser shows a list of KDE's global Places and takes advantage of the breadcrumb bar. The icons have also been updated to match the rest of the Oxygen theme.

With a few exceptions, K3b keeps feature-parity with 1.0.x series, but it also introduces a number of new features. Perhaps the biggest among these is support for Blu-ray drives. Additionally a lot of work have been put into improving the overall user experience. Some work-flows have been merged abstracting it for all kinds of media.

The K3b team has worked hard to achieve maximum stability of the application, with over 250 bugs being closed during the pre-release period. This process will continue as bug-fixing versions will be released during development of K3b 2.1.

Changes since 1.0.5
* Port to KDE Platform 4
* Always allow manual writing speed selection
* Use proper toolbars instead of the toolboxes -> nicer laying out with different styles
* Merged CD and DVD copy dialogs
* Merged CD and DVD image burning dialogs
* Merged CD-RW erasing and DVD formatting dialogs
* Merged Data CD and Data DVD projects into one plain data project with Blu-ray support
* Merged eMovix CD and eMovix DVD projects
* Removed CD copy option "prefer CD-Text". K3b will now ask individually (there is no need to do this if no mounting is involved)
* Allow importing of arbitrary sessions into a data project, thus continuing other than the last session
* "Clear project" now only clears the added data but leaves the settings as they were (bug 147838)
* Added support for files bigger than 4GB via mkisofs 2.01.01a32 and above
* Do only reload the medium for verification if necessary (depends on the writer)
* Support for Blu-ray writing
* Support for DVD and Blu-ray writing via cdrecord
* New audio ripping pattern %e which is replaced by the file extension
* Better support for RTL languages

 cross fade

by mojavelinux on: Jan 8 2004

Score 50%

I am beginning to sound like a broken record requesting this feature, but is there anyone else out there who thinks that "crossfade" would be a good feature? I once made a CD where the tracks blended together and people loved it! And it was fun, a very personal touch. Perhaps if you like the idea, you can make some noise about it.

Why just not take out the interval between songs ... its not crossfading but it stop the nasty pauses between tracks... Crossfading IMO would be hard to do, because that is not the task of a cd/dvd burning software...

Not true, there is direct device support for such a function and Nero Burning ROM can make use of this feature. It just so happens to be one of the most popular/requested features for Nero Burning ROM and it would be nice to see it in an open source program. I haven't been able to mix down tracks this way since my days in windows.

Nope, don't like the idea. This sort of fucks with the artwork of the composer/artist, i.e. if the intended ending of the track is sharp, then so be it.

Remember back in your disco days when you were dancing to your favorite artist's song and then... the DJ from hell fades the song out just *before* it gets interesting...

 K3b Config Bug

 by sher07 on: Jan 17 2004

Score 50%

Dear Sebastian:

[Using Xandros 2.0 and the latest Debian package for K3b 0.10.3].

When I UNcheck cdrecord and cdread in Setup (which I am required to do so as not to conflict with Xandros's own CD Writer, which uses its own Xandros File Manager as CD Writer), I then press ENTER and am told that the change was successful. I hit OK, but when I exit K3b, then reopen it, they remain UNchecked. Please add "Save" button. Please see screenshot at: http://www.websher.net/K3b1.png

Sorry, but I think you misunderstood the purpose of K3bSetup. It should be used to change the permissions of the programs and devices. It does not save any options. It is NOT to be confused with the K3b settings dialog. When you click "apply" or "ok" the permissions of the checked entries will get changed. That's all.

 Please add "OK"

Dear Sebastian:

Thank you for the clarification. However, may I suggest:

1) Add an "OK" button to "save" the permissions changes. There is NO way to know what to do. Someone on our forum told us. Make it clear to the user. It won't kill you and will save us a lot of grief. Thanks. :-))

2) Xandros requires that these changes be permanent so as to protect the Xandros CD Writer. Please see:

http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=4085&highlight=k3b

Please make things clear by adding a "Save" function to changes made to External Programs. And make sure they persist.

Thank you.

Benjamin

I can't add another button to a KControlcenter module.
And I cannot make sure the changes persist. How should I do that? I can't create special setup routines for all distributions.

 K3b Setup problem

 by thed3vil on: Jan 20 2004

Score 50%

First of all, I would like to thank you for a great app.

I am, however, experiencing some difficulties running when trying to run k3bsetup. Opening k3bsetup from the settings menu in k3b does not work, and when I run "kcmshell k3bsetup2" as root I get the following output:

$kcmshell k3bsetup2
kbuildsycoca running...
kcontrol: ERROR: Module k3bsetup2 not found!
QMutex::unlock: unlock from different thread than locker
was locked by 0, unlock attempt from 16384
$Mutex destroy failure: Device or resource busy

I compiled k3b 0.10.3 from source using --prefix=/usr on a Mandrake 9.1 system. The configure script had "Compile K3bSetup 2: yes", yet I can't seem to run it. Any ideas where my problem could lie?

 A missing feature

by stevo on: Jan 20 2004

Score 50%

first I want to say that this software is the best cd burning tool I have ever used, even compared to Nero on Windows. K3b might not have all the features yet, but I guess it will get even more every month.

I have one feature request: I would like to be able to burn MP3-Cue-Files. Those are similar to VCD-Cue sheets, but contain the track information so that a long MP3 file (usually mixes of electronic music) can be split up for burning. This is probably not used too often, but is very useful if you have long mp3 files.

Thanx!

 Burning DVD-RW

by Claire on: Jan 24 2004

Score 50%

Thanks for this great application. I use k3b frequently to burn backup CDs and rip my classical CD collection. The compilation of 0.11 was a breeze, and I enjoy being welcomed by a brand new exquisite theme.

I hope this is not the wrong place to ask, otherwise, I would really like to know where to ask for help with the following problem.

Since the introduction of the dvd+rw tools I have not been able to write/read any DVD-RW media. There are no error messages, but after the burning process nothing seems to have happened. According to k3b the DVD is still empty.

Mounting the DVD with the DVD-writer or my friends DVD-player yields the error message:
---------------------------------------
Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
/dev/sr0: Invalid argument
mount: I could not determine the filesystem type, and none was specified
---------------------------------------

I don't know if growisofs actually writes anything to the DVD. K3B, and my system, think the disk is still empty:
---------------------------------------
Disk is empty
Media
Type: DVD-RW
Size: 510:38:38 4,4GB
Remaining: 510:38:38 4,4GB
Rewritable: yes
Appendable: no
Empty: yes
Sessions 0
---------------------------------------

Do you have any idea how the problem can be solved? My system configuration is summarized below. Thanks in advance and thanks again for this fantastic application.

---------------------------------------
Jewel Saffier 1500(rebrand of Uniwell N341C2)
AMD XP Mobile 2000 CPU
512 MB RAM

K3b Version: 0.11
KDE Version: 3.1.4
QT Version: 3.2.3-0

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
