Description:

K3b is a full-featured CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burning and ripping application.
It supports a variety of project types as well as copying of optical media, burning if different types of images, and ripping Audio CDs, Video CDs, and Video DVDs.
Its convenient user interface is targetted at all audiences, trying to be as simple as possible for novice users while also providing all features and advanced user might need.

Changelog:

K3b 2.0 marks the last milestone in the effort to port one of the most popular disk recording applications to KDE's current Platform 4. Although some parts still use legacy libraries, the application takes advantage of the new platform and integrates better with it. Solid, the KDE hardware layer, is now used for hardware detection.

On the interface front K3b 2.0 is a direct port of its KDE3 predecessor. The overall look remains the same but it now uses modern widgets. For example, file browser shows a list of KDE's global Places and takes advantage of the breadcrumb bar. The icons have also been updated to match the rest of the Oxygen theme.

With a few exceptions, K3b keeps feature-parity with 1.0.x series, but it also introduces a number of new features. Perhaps the biggest among these is support for Blu-ray drives. Additionally a lot of work have been put into improving the overall user experience. Some work-flows have been merged abstracting it for all kinds of media.

The K3b team has worked hard to achieve maximum stability of the application, with over 250 bugs being closed during the pre-release period. This process will continue as bug-fixing versions will be released during development of K3b 2.1.

Changes since 1.0.5
* Port to KDE Platform 4
* Always allow manual writing speed selection
* Use proper toolbars instead of the toolboxes -> nicer laying out with different styles
* Merged CD and DVD copy dialogs
* Merged CD and DVD image burning dialogs
* Merged CD-RW erasing and DVD formatting dialogs
* Merged Data CD and Data DVD projects into one plain data project with Blu-ray support
* Merged eMovix CD and eMovix DVD projects
* Removed CD copy option "prefer CD-Text". K3b will now ask individually (there is no need to do this if no mounting is involved)
* Allow importing of arbitrary sessions into a data project, thus continuing other than the last session
* "Clear project" now only clears the added data but leaves the settings as they were (bug 147838)
* Added support for files bigger than 4GB via mkisofs 2.01.01a32 and above
* Do only reload the medium for verification if necessary (depends on the writer)
* Support for Blu-ray writing
* Support for DVD and Blu-ray writing via cdrecord
* New audio ripping pattern %e which is replaced by the file extension
* Better support for RTL languages

 Just a question

I've noticed K3B has never gone even up to 0.2. When are you gonna make the versions sound like real improvements? :P
These mini-versions are kind of lame.
I mean, most of the functionality is already there.
Burn CDs/DVDs
Various format image handling
Music burning
Music preview
All the other functions K3B already has.
You should really make more improvement-looking versions.

(BTW, love the app. Ace job ;))

 Can't burn a cd

by maarizwan on: Nov 1 2005

version 0.12 (also svn) can't burn a cd, whereas version 0.11.24 can burn cds properly.

I suspect something got broken in the latest version.

And thanks for a wonderful and useful application -> k3b!!!

 Can't find cdwriter

by maarizwan on: Nov 2 2005

Score 50%

k3b svn version does not detect my cdrw, but version 0.11.24 could detect the cdwriter.

k3bsetup shows the cdwriter in both 0.12svn and 0.11.24.

0.12svn will only burn to image. it is not asking to insert cd (because it is not able to detect cdwriter)

i'll check with today's svn k3b version to check it fixed or not.

I'm having trouble installing the latest version of k3b. I found the following during make install and checkinstall attempts:

What could it be?

The BorgQueen

PS the time is set correctly on the machine.

How about this?
We put a CD in the drive and start a project that will normalize each track, encode for mp3 or ogg, tag the file and put the resulting files into the folder of our choice. Is there an app that already does this?

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
