Description:

K3b is a full-featured CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burning and ripping application.
It supports a variety of project types as well as copying of optical media, burning if different types of images, and ripping Audio CDs, Video CDs, and Video DVDs.
Its convenient user interface is targetted at all audiences, trying to be as simple as possible for novice users while also providing all features and advanced user might need.

Changelog:

K3b 2.0 marks the last milestone in the effort to port one of the most popular disk recording applications to KDE's current Platform 4. Although some parts still use legacy libraries, the application takes advantage of the new platform and integrates better with it. Solid, the KDE hardware layer, is now used for hardware detection.

On the interface front K3b 2.0 is a direct port of its KDE3 predecessor. The overall look remains the same but it now uses modern widgets. For example, file browser shows a list of KDE's global Places and takes advantage of the breadcrumb bar. The icons have also been updated to match the rest of the Oxygen theme.

With a few exceptions, K3b keeps feature-parity with 1.0.x series, but it also introduces a number of new features. Perhaps the biggest among these is support for Blu-ray drives. Additionally a lot of work have been put into improving the overall user experience. Some work-flows have been merged abstracting it for all kinds of media.

The K3b team has worked hard to achieve maximum stability of the application, with over 250 bugs being closed during the pre-release period. This process will continue as bug-fixing versions will be released during development of K3b 2.1.

Changes since 1.0.5
* Port to KDE Platform 4
* Always allow manual writing speed selection
* Use proper toolbars instead of the toolboxes -> nicer laying out with different styles
* Merged CD and DVD copy dialogs
* Merged CD and DVD image burning dialogs
* Merged CD-RW erasing and DVD formatting dialogs
* Merged Data CD and Data DVD projects into one plain data project with Blu-ray support
* Merged eMovix CD and eMovix DVD projects
* Removed CD copy option "prefer CD-Text". K3b will now ask individually (there is no need to do this if no mounting is involved)
* Allow importing of arbitrary sessions into a data project, thus continuing other than the last session
* "Clear project" now only clears the added data but leaves the settings as they were (bug 147838)
* Added support for files bigger than 4GB via mkisofs 2.01.01a32 and above
* Do only reload the medium for verification if necessary (depends on the writer)
* Support for Blu-ray writing
* Support for DVD and Blu-ray writing via cdrecord
* New audio ripping pattern %e which is replaced by the file extension
* Better support for RTL languages

 K3B is great ...

... and very useful.

But what about a complete structured Projects-Panel with all possible options (including those in the EXTRAS menu)? I don't understand why I have to use the menu bar to create a copy of my cds or burn an image ...

Maybe grouped in "CD", DVD", "Tools" like this:

  • CD

    • Data
    • Audio
    • Copy
    • Create Image
    • Burn Image

  • DVD

    • Data
    • Copy
    • Create Image
    • Burn Image

  • Tools

    • Erase CD RW
    • Erase DVD RW

Or like this:

  • Data CD/DVD
    [...]
  • Audio CD/DVD
    [...]
  • Video CD/DVD
    [...]
  • Duplicate CD/DVD
    [...]

Something like that in a nice looking Project Panel :-)

Go on with you good work!

For now try right-clicking the project panel. ;)
Perhaps you could create a little picture or qt-designer moc-up as an idea?

 K3b won't compile

Dear Sebastian:

I would really appreciate your help in recompiling K3b 0.11.2. I have installed every library or file mentioned during install but it still won't configure. Could you please take a look at my config.log and tell me what's wrong? You'll find it at:

http://www.websher.net/config.log

Thank you so much.

looks as if your qt is too old. You should install the latest 3.1.x or 3.2.x version.

Dear Sebastian:

[Using Xandros 2.0]

In all due respect, I don't think that's the problem. Please see my two screenshots. Unless I am mistaken, they seem to show QT 3.x.

http://www.websher.net/qt-2.png

Am I right?

If so, why can't I compile k3b 0.11.2?

Thank you so much.

 burn ISO image?!

by MonteS on: Feb 11 2004

Score 50%

had 0.11.1
upgraded to 0.11.2
same
no more Burn ISO image... (had previous versions and it had it)
though now in Tools\DVD\Burn DVD image
there is a dialogue entitled... strangely... "Burn Iso9660 image", which dialogue of course doesn't see my CDRW unit because it looks (I suppose) for a DVDR/W unit
so as though I don't like xcdroast, I have to use that now to burn ISOs :(
I posted here, because i HATE the k3b.sf.net Feedback, couldn't locate the bug reports so i can look if that is known or not...
sorry but I think it's more important to have CDRW Burn Iso image than DVD.. i still think that there are more people with CDRW than DVDRW

i had that option on a previous version of k3b (can't tell for sure the version number but i can look if there is the need)
but the option is not present in 0.11.2
and neither in 0.11.3
i just compiled 0.11.3 and it's not there
in Tools\CD i have two options:
1. Copy CD
2 Erase CD/RW
that's what i was saying:)

Dear Sebastian:

Thanks again for your advice. I finally succeeded in finding and installing the libqt3-mt-dev file from debian unstable.

I installed libqt-mt-dev from Debian unstable and tried to configure k3b both
with ./configure --prefix=$(kde-config --prefix) as well as with the
standard /.configure command. Either way, I got the same error message:

checking for Qt... libraries /usr/share/qt3/lib,
headers /usr/share/qt3/include using -mt
checking for moc... /usr/share/qt3/bin/moc
checking for uic... /usr/share/qt3/bin/uic
checking whether uic supports -L ... yes
checking whether uic supports -nounload ... yes
checking if Qt needs -ljpeg... no
checking for rpath... yes
checking for KDE... configure: error:
in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail.
So, check this please and use another prefix!
sher@Dell:~/L-Files/Downloads/Tars/k3b-0.11.3$

What does it mean that there are no KDE headers installed? How could this be?
Can you please help me understand this?

Thank you so much.

Benjamin

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
