Description:

K3b is a full-featured CD/DVD/Blu-Ray burning and ripping application.
It supports a variety of project types as well as copying of optical media, burning if different types of images, and ripping Audio CDs, Video CDs, and Video DVDs.
Its convenient user interface is targetted at all audiences, trying to be as simple as possible for novice users while also providing all features and advanced user might need.

Changelog:

K3b 2.0 marks the last milestone in the effort to port one of the most popular disk recording applications to KDE's current Platform 4. Although some parts still use legacy libraries, the application takes advantage of the new platform and integrates better with it. Solid, the KDE hardware layer, is now used for hardware detection.

On the interface front K3b 2.0 is a direct port of its KDE3 predecessor. The overall look remains the same but it now uses modern widgets. For example, file browser shows a list of KDE's global Places and takes advantage of the breadcrumb bar. The icons have also been updated to match the rest of the Oxygen theme.

With a few exceptions, K3b keeps feature-parity with 1.0.x series, but it also introduces a number of new features. Perhaps the biggest among these is support for Blu-ray drives. Additionally a lot of work have been put into improving the overall user experience. Some work-flows have been merged abstracting it for all kinds of media.

The K3b team has worked hard to achieve maximum stability of the application, with over 250 bugs being closed during the pre-release period. This process will continue as bug-fixing versions will be released during development of K3b 2.1.

Changes since 1.0.5
* Port to KDE Platform 4
* Always allow manual writing speed selection
* Use proper toolbars instead of the toolboxes -> nicer laying out with different styles
* Merged CD and DVD copy dialogs
* Merged CD and DVD image burning dialogs
* Merged CD-RW erasing and DVD formatting dialogs
* Merged Data CD and Data DVD projects into one plain data project with Blu-ray support
* Merged eMovix CD and eMovix DVD projects
* Removed CD copy option "prefer CD-Text". K3b will now ask individually (there is no need to do this if no mounting is involved)
* Allow importing of arbitrary sessions into a data project, thus continuing other than the last session
* "Clear project" now only clears the added data but leaves the settings as they were (bug 147838)
* Added support for files bigger than 4GB via mkisofs 2.01.01a32 and above
* Do only reload the medium for verification if necessary (depends on the writer)
* Support for Blu-ray writing
* Support for DVD and Blu-ray writing via cdrecord
* New audio ripping pattern %e which is replaced by the file extension
* Better support for RTL languages

I had the same problem.
Try to acces the ftp server directly (ftp://ftp.sf.net/k/k3/k3b)

Stupid question:
I'm currently on a M$ machine, using that funny thing that pretends to be a browser (but seems more to be something like a crashmachine - i'm using it because the university has T3 :)
and sf.net tries to access osdn.sf....
instead of any mirror i tried.
Is there a way to block certain OS or even Browsers (from sf - i'd know how to implement this for my own page)? (ie... Access... DENIED! *ggg*)

 Clock errors?

My clock is fine, I don't have any problems configuring any other application, I haver never seen an error like this before.

./configure --prefix=/opt/kde3
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking for -p flag to install... yes
checking whether build environment is sane... configure: error: newly created file is older than distributed files!
Check your system clock

The reason is simple: files were created in another time zone. If we suppose those files were generated at 6h36am somewhere in Europe, it was 0h36am in east America. If you try to compile files who were generated in future, it's normal that something isn't sane for your compiler!
Just wait few hours and it will compile fine!

More useful will be simply setting the timestamp of the files to current time:

find . -exec touch \{\} \;

in the k3b source dir...

Just to congratulate you for this very great project !

Very well : it's so easy to burn CDs.
I've begined to use Linux one year and a half ago and was disapointed to do not be able to burn CDs *easily* (when it was doable).

Now, we have program to burn CDs (and DVDs).
But it is also easy and fast : no 50 dialogs, the program have just essential features in a coherent interface
It change from Windows burning programs (hum... in fact lot of KDE programs are better than Windows equivalents !)

All these programs remain me everydays why I use KDE, and then Linux !
And it's only a begin ;-)

To go back to the subject : K3B, when do you plan a 1.0 release ?
Not that I am pressed but for me K3b could be 1.0 since lot of months !
Perhapse the responses is on the website...

i recently installed k3b [redhat 9 shrike] and should say it's a great app.

k3 worked fine the first time i installed it as root..

but now it works only in [** non-root* ] mode.

when i run it, it says

--> the specified directory doesn'nt exist or not readable

--> the KDE Crash Handler caught the following..

the application k3b crashed and caused signal 11 (SIGSEGV)

There really is no need to run k3b as root. Why would you want to do that? Don't use root unless you realy need it.

Then again, the problem itself is kinda funny, it is probably because your path is screwed up, or your root kde profile is screwed up. Try to remove alle the k3b related stuff under /root/.kde3.x/.

Oh and make a backup. You are root, remember, you've got the power to really screw up your system.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
