Description:

Plasmoid providing fancy visualization of tasks, launchers and jobs for those who need full power of task manager and fresh look.
Developed and tested on KDE 4.8 with Qt 4.8 (Kubuntu 12.04).

Some screen casts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5i2S1xCKPk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj4W6cqycl8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfqtnncLNcQ

Milestone 1.1 (current) will be last one using libtaskamanager and hopefully will be soon replaced by currently developed data engine based version (which should lower requirements back to KDE 4.6 or maybe earlier, depending on which one shipped first functional version of tasks data engine).

Milestone 2.0 will bring new dock management library which will allow for more advanced features. There will be also new, QML based, applet interface (might be available earlier, depends on progress on library).

Note that included panel was made only for test and could make various problems, use it on your own risk (I'll focus on it later).

This applet uses standard libtaskmanager like other task managers in KDE, so before you report bug check if it also happens in other applets (for example default Tasks applet).

Tips:
- to make applet more usable you can put it on panel with enabled option "Windows can cover" or similar;
- you can use theme with panel background similar to that of dock (for example Sabre Tiger) or modify current one using Desktop Theme Details;
- you can add launchers to applet by drag and drop of URLs and desktop files when Plasma is unlocked or using configuration dialog;
- to show only launchers you need to remove tasks area item from arrangement;
- to show application jobs you need to add jobs area.

Hidden options:
You can set them in applets configuration file (usually located at ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc), in group containing line plugin=fancytasks or plugin=fancypanel;
- initialZoomLevel - initial zoom level for zoom move animations (value ranging from 0 to 1, default: 0.7);
- paintBackground - decides if background should be painted or not (true or false, default: true);
- paintReflections - decides if icon reflection should be painted or not, note that it won't change icon size because of space allocation for drawing task indicators (true or false, default: true).

Features:
- manages your tasks, launchers and application jobs;
- tasks filtering, grouping (including manual) and sorting;
- keyboard navigation (Tab and Shift+Tab);
- launcher to task transition with custom connecting rules (icons of launchers with running tasks are hidden if sorting other than manual is enabled);
- tool tips with live preview of windows when KWin Taskbar Thumbnail effect is enabled;
- highlighting windows when hovering cursor over task or window preview when KWin Highlight Window effect is enabled;
- dropping files on launchers runs command with parameters or gives option to move, copy or link them (if target is directory);
- visual drop indicator that helps in manual tasks sorting and rearranging launchers;
- possibility to browse directories of directory launchers using context menu;
- possibility to add application menus;
- menu with list of all icons shown after activating keyboard shortcut;
- configurable animations (zoom, jump, bounce, highlight, etc.) and appearance (optional thumbnails and text label);
- fully animated icons (including animations of starting applications, tasks needing attention and application jobs progress).

If you have found bugs or have suggestions you can contact me via email, message or using comments, before you will vote bad.
And remember that not everybody has enough time for fast replying. ;-)

Don't be silly, don't vote bad just for fun!

Changelog:

1.1.2 (10.06.2012):
- increased task light size a bit;
- fixed label position for zoom animation;
- avoid hijacking of icons with launcher connected to task group (if grouping by program);
- clear thumbnail when launcher looses connected task.

1.1.1 (01.06.2012):
- reuse launcher icons by tasks also when using manual sorting;
- let startups connect to launcher icons (when there is no sorting or it set to manual);
- do not lose connection with launcher when group is created (if grouping by program);
- enable Apply button when configuration values are changed;
- do not propose to drop icon in place which equals its current index;
- enable Add / Remove action buttons;
- many other fixes and changes.

 WTF?

What the fu*k is wrong with this applet? This is not first time when it gets lower rating after update and there is usually no feedback, nobody complaints about bugs or something. :-/
If you don't like this, simply say that, maybe I'll stop developing and try to remove all traces of my work, if you don't need this.
So I suppose that there is group of people that votes bad for fun or something...

If you vote bad for fun then Fu*k off and go back to your playground!
If you vote bad only because you don't like author then fu*k off and go back to your playground!
If you vote bad because you found something wrong with content then report to author, wait for answer and then think again about voting.

Developers and artists works hard and waste their free time for free, then release it for all and get this...
This is sick, they are also people and they need at least good word about their work form time to time if it is good or criticism when is bad to help in improving it, but not this stupid behavior. :-/

Current voting system still doesn't tell nothing at all about content! Only makes authors sad and makes them think that free work for others doesn't make sense at all.

Sorry for this comment but I'm again frustrated by this sick situation...
This don't makes community at all, only group of people that want to destroy others work or at least annoy others with no reason or for sheet reasons.

I can really understand your anger. I use your plasmoid every day and I am very happy with it. Nice work! Currently I am using KDE 4.2.4, but I am very happy when 4.3 appears, cause then I can use your plasmoid in the newest version with many new Features (especially the mix between Launcher and Task is a very nice and need feature).

One of my wishes is, that your plasmoid has a feature to autocenter the plasmoid at the bottom of the screen. On top of that it'll be very nice, if the plasmoid can hide automatically and by moving the mouse cursor near the bottom screen, the plasmoid appears over the windows. Currently I'm having the plasmoid in a panel, but this doesnt shrink and grow automatically when new tasks/launchers appears and also the skin of the plasmoid isnt very nice in the panel. So this would be a nice feature.

Thanks for your efforts and work!

Thanks. :-)

I can try to prepare patch for 4.2, but I don't have it installed currently and need someone to test it when ready. There is only one incompatible change in "third party" library, libtaskmamanager...

Own containment would be nice but I need some time to create it (I don't want to remove possibility to use this like normal applet). I've did some research on this topic and probably I'll try to add it soon (August), maybe in collaboration with Lechio (Daisy developer).

Thanks for your engagement! I dont want to hurry you with my ideas, it was just an annotation.

You dont need to create a package for 4.2. 4.3 is out in a week an then I'm happy, but thank you very much!

Best regards!

Well, I think that the vote percentage automatically go down after a few time until somebody vote "+" again. It is to prevent staying always at the top even if there are no new voters.

So there is a high chance that nobody voted "bad" and it is simply the rating mechanism.

Anyway, your plasmoid is just great and I can't even imagine why someone would vote "bad" for it :)

cheers

But if this is true then is even worse, because if there are strange and not typical voting rules unknown to users then this site is still not for me...

I know some of reasons of bad voting, one of them is that if users of one applet likes it very much then they want to "help" in promoting it so they vote bad other contents, especially contents of the same type or with similar rating... I'm observing rating changes for nearly one year and I know how they behaves... There was 89% yesterday, no it is 88%...

Current voting system is simply unfair and it's not going to change soon. Should be removed or changed to something better (there are many ideas how to improve it). You can check "improved voting system" group (need to join for reading), 311 comments and only one (as far as I know) change in January (voting disabled for not logged users).

Indeed, the voting system is not optimal... but remember that the automatic decrease is for each entry in KDE Look so even if yours decrease, you're still at the top of the others :)

I also contribute some code from time to time (not enough... cruel lack of time...) and remember that for each angry user that say something, you have ten happy users... and probably thousands or ten of thousands users who silently enjoy your contribution !

Cheers :)

Wow! This is a great plasmoid. I just installed it on rc3 and am amazed by how far it has come. Keep up the great work!

The only issue I ran into so far is that when using the Magic Lamp desktop effect, minimized windows are restored neither from the task manager, nor from Fancy Tasks, if Fancy Tasks is put in a bottom panel, but from the top of the screen.

Anyways, thank you for your work!

Oh, one more thing: when Fancy Tasks is in the panel, the icons are a little bit too small. :)

Yeah, this problem can be solved, if the plasmoid can also be a containment. I already mentioned that a few post above yours. He said he is working on this :). So good news!

I'll investigate that problem, should be easy to fix but also shouldn't happen now. ;-)

In case of containment I can't promise that it will be done before end of August (and if it will be done at all...). Firstly I want to finish work on jobs integration and do some cleanups (there are some plans to make some things shareable with other task manager applets without copying code). And I need to work on some other projects also and I'm having renovation in flat right now. :-/

As I already said before: Dont stress yourself! It's nice that you do this all for free!

I installed KDE 4.3 RC3 and I tested the new version. Very nice! The combination of task and launcher ist very good (is it maybe possible, that the launcher stay on the same position and become a task (currently it changes its position in the bar)). One Problem: When I start the console or dolphin (already a launcher in the bar), the plasmoid does not change his state from the launcher to a task. So I have the console launcher and the console task. How can I fix this? This problem only appears by the console and dolphin.

Best regards!

Thanks, users like you are blessing for OS developers. ;-)

Yes, I'm thinking about adding possibility to not move icon when connecting task and launcher (see TODO), but this is not as easy like should be. ;-)

In case of Konsole this is not so easy to find launcher for it because it uses untypical title and as far as I know it sets wrong window class name (at least in case of using Composite). Dolphin works good for me, but maybe you are using directory launcher, not normal application launcher?

Connecting task and launcher is based on comparing title and class window with information available in .desktop file. Currently there is no better method for that. :-/

Has anyone had any luck with 0.9.3 on Jaunty (64-bit) with KDE 4.3? I have been unable to compile this and have not found a .deb.

Just want to report a little bug. When you use it for launchers and tasks and you have some launchers/tasks (launchers turned into tasks) open and you use as an example the glow effekt, then the wrong icons are lit on some positions. Same effect when you use bounce effect or something else. Maybe a variable counter hasn't corrected/set or something like this.

This could be caused by some too big optimizations made recently...

I've only seen some problems after finish of animations for icons demanding attention or after startup to task transition.

Could you attach screenshot?

Ok, I have made two screenshots but the mouse cursor isnt on it so I explain it.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/9364/bildschirmfoto1y.png

Here the cursor is over the OOo Icon, but the glow effect works on the console Icon.

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/1224/bildschirmfoto2x.png

On this image the cursor is over the kmail icon, but the kopete icon has the glow effect. Hope you see what I mean. This all is caused by the fusion between launcher and task.

 Drag and drop issue

First off thanks for this lovely applet. Been using it for some versions now and I love it. For the moment I'm running Kubuntu karmic with kde 4.2.98. I love the new config menu where i can get launchers to switch places and stuff however I find myself unable to add launchers the old way (wich I prefer) by dragging and dropping. I made sure widgets were unlocked as you said. Any ideas on that???
Will not p*ss you off and will vote good like you deserve.
Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem. You can solve it by creating a launcher through the menu (right click -> setting etc.) and there you choose a text file or something as a launcher. Then you can add launchers bei dragging and dropping. A little bug I think.

Hope that helps.

Yes, I see that there is problem when you don't have any launcher already, dragging launcher over task icon don't cause showing of drop indicator... :-/

I'll try to fix this regression for next release (probably before 10 of August (now I'm busy working on Mini Player etc. and I've renovation in my flat right now...).

But anyway old way of launchers management is not intended to be primary (I'll keep only option to add them and move, but some people suggested to remove it completely but I don't agree on that), dialog is preferred.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
