Join the KDE Artists team

By telex
Published: Mar 17 2004

Following the recent launch of the KDE Quality Team Project, a team for KDE Artists has been started. If you've ever wanted to get your work in official KDE packages, then this is your perfect opportunity.

The KDE Artists Quality Team needs people who can create new art, be it wallpapers, icons, Qt styles, window decorations, posters and logos for events, and all the other kinds of art found on this web site. The team also needs those who are interested in KDE artwork even if they aren't very artistic, and who can help organise and administer the artwork team. So rather than post your art on kde-look for karma, why not go a step further and have it released around the world in standard KDE packages?

To learn more and join, have a look at the KDE Artists Quality Team web page. Since the team is new, the page is quite empty, so a simple first task would be to add more content to the page, or begin to work on new artwork, and update existing artwork.

If you have any questions, post them on the kde-quality mailing list, or leave a message here and I will try to check back regularly for at least a week.

I would join, but the site is very confusing and completely cluttered with irrelevant stuff. I'm not sure if this is the fault of wiki, or the fault of a misapplication of wiki. But frankly I don't want any part of this disorganization.

Part of the disorganisation is because it is a wiki.

But it is also because we need people to step forward and organise it. Those of us who are working on setting these teams up don't have the time to run them, so we need people like you to step forward, organise things a little more and get working, in this case, on some really great artwork.

Together we can really start to improve KDE :)

At this point in time, there are no members of this team listed on the page. Not even you. Either no one is interested, or wiki is too hard for artists to use. If even the people who started this are unwilling to sign up, why should I?

I'm not listed because I don't have the time to do it. I already co-ordinate the kde-multimedia team, as well as all my other work and projects.

Perhaps everybody is thinking the same as you - I'd like to do it but it looks like nobody is going to join - and so what we really need is one or two people to start off and put their names down.

You're obviously a talented artist, with some good styles to your name. Why not get them into kde-artwork, and help others on KDE-Look do likewise? Why not make a name for yourself in KDE as well as on KDE-Look?

Well, you convinced me. So I signed up for the mailing list and got a KDE Wiki account. But now I can't even add my name to the list of people. This is pointless!

Oh I get it now! If I'm logged in under my account, I can't edit anything. But if I'm NOT logged in at all, under any account, I can!

 Artists

Why do you want to have Artists in the KDE Artists team? May sound stupid at first, but, if the KDE artwork comes from a limited number of people within the team, the variety of the art is also limited.

I rather would like to see content to be added to KDE-Look.org and the KDE Artists team to act as a jury, who looks on the KDE-Look content and decides, which content is included in the standard KDE distribution.

Same applies to Logos and so on... If you need a logo, make a competition and you will get submissions from the whole community, not just from a few artists in the KDE Artists team.

Working with KDE-Look is exactly the sort of thing the KDE Artists Quality Team will be doing.

At the moment, we have a small team of dedicated artists who don't have time to do the necessary work to keep all packaged KDE artwork up to date. Yet there are numerous artists on KDE-Look posting good artwork that could well be included in KDE packages.

We also have lots of conferences and trade shows where KDE stalls could use targetted artwork, but those involved don't have the time to organise competitions on KDE-Look for each event.

These are just two examples of the sort of work Quality Team members can do, bringing the excellent KDE-Look community closer to the "official" KDE artwork team.

It's a bit difficult to say from 3 submissions, but whether you feel good enough or not, simply join the team, post a message on the mailing lists saying you've joined the artist team, and then see what you can do.

You can then either ask the people on the kde-artwork list if specific wallpapers can be included in the kde-artwork package, or you can work with other people's artwork, finding icons that need doing, finding promising work on KDE-Look, and doing the other tasks listed on the page.

You may find your own art improves as you work in the team

Subscribe to the mailing lists suggested on the Quality Team page (both fairly low traffic for KDE lists), put your name down on the wiki page, and start doing whatever work interests you :-)

Welcome aboard!

 A good idea

I must admit, it was time, that someone thought about putting some "beautiful" stuff into the KDE packages. Okay, the standard icons look good (thanx to everaldo), the windecos are mostly okay, but the wallpapers provided by KDE are plain and simply ugly and they were the first thing I threw out of my hd. same goes to the color schemes. Most of them are *coughing* not all too good.

 Way to go Artists

Please don't knock the effort of the KDE Artists Team for trying to inspire people to join their project, their results benefit KDE as a whole, and I'm sure any help in any way, shape, or form they can get would be greatly appreciated.
I encourage anybody who is not involved in any project to get involved in something. Its very rewarding to be a part of a great group of people working towards a common cause.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
