XFree86 Core Team Disbands

By Yaba
Published: Dec 31 2003

According to a note on the XFree86 Project homepage, the core team has disbanded. Bad news for the future of XFree86.

Let's hope, that Keith Packard with his fork called Xouvert will be fast enough to fill the gap. There is a good interview about the new X-Server with Keith Packard on OSnews (with more interviews at the bottom of the page, e.g. with Waldo Bastian about KDE and freedesktop.org).

For all the Folks understanding German, there is a more comprehensive article on Heise Online: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/jk-31.12.03-006/

Does anybody have more info in English?

...my wife complained that I do not pay attention...or something like that...

 xouvert & kpackard

xouvert is not kpackard's fork, but is just a development branch of xfree86. kpackard is currently working on the xserver on www.freedesktop.org

As far as I know, kpackards Xserver is not even based on XFree86, but on TinyX or something like that.

What are you talking about?? There is nothing to see here. Have you actually read the message? Seems like most of the work was beeing done by others who do not belong to the core team, it was an unfair situation. That's all.
This is probably a *good thing* since many people have accused the XFree project of beeing to closed and in that sense this is a step in the right direction.

Subject: core team disbands

I'm very pleased to announce that a majority of the XFree86 core team
has voted in favour of my proposal to disband the core team.

I believe that this is an acknowlegement that the core team was no longer
representative of the active, experienced and skilled XFree86 developers,
or a place where technical discussion happens.

Happy New Year to all!

David"

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
