beta redesign

beta redesign

By Frank
Published: Oct 22 2008

I thought a lot about a way to redesign the websites to make it easier to understand and use. The plan is to make the website layout as light as possible so that the actual content is in the focus and more visible.

Another goal was to introduce a real navigation where you can see what kind of functionality the websites provides and you see where you are, at the moment.

The current design is not finished yet. This is in beta stage, at the moment. I would like to hear feedback from you.
What do you like? What don´t you like?

Please post you comments here.

Thank you for your help.

Cheers
Frank

-------update-------

I fixed a few small bugs and transformed a few more websites to the new design. What do you think?

I basically like all the changes, apart from the new logo (the old one was much cooler!)

I didn't even realize the change, I was browsing through some stuff today and all of a sudden looked at the menu and went 'woah!'.

I love it though, very sleek, hoping to see more.

The new layout is much better than before - very easy to navigate - and is more of an improvement than just increasing the eye-candy would have been. I'm still a big fan of eye-candy, though, but if you want a simple look, the usability of the new site is good enough for me.

i'm glad you got rid of the stupid gloss crap :)

right now the whole thing suffers from a lack of visual structure. the top tabs have a pure white outline which is so contrasting that it doesn't register with me as an outline at all... it should have a lower opacity

under the blue header there's some empty enclosed white space, which should just go..

the logo looks like it was badly cut&pasted, the edges are smudgy. try rendering this one instead: http://www.kde.org/stuff/clipart/klogo-official-lineart_simple_bw.svg

the text around the logo is not hinted well, so it's blurry.

all of your rounded corners seem to have wrong gamma correction. Therefore the light ones are pixelized/overexposed and the dark ones are hardly visible.

the top corners of the header aren't rounded.

The titles of sidebar boxes ("ARTWORK", "POLL" etc) are about 2px too high.

the unordered lists (like the Artwork Categories on the left) look messy, they need some sort of bullets or arrows -- or some other way to make them look like more than a huge paragraph.

the white Google ad in the header obscures the shape terribly, it should be as blue as the header (and with a whitish border) -- google allow you to customize to that effect.

enough for now.

ping me @ stefan.monov(at)gmail.com if you want help with gfx or css.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
