 This site sucks

This site sucks.

I'm going to say it again:

This site sucks.

There's a very specific reason this site sucks. It's not the content, because the majority of the content is great. It's not the site design, as the site design is very nice and powerful, while still moderately low load. Also, it definetly isn't the management : the people running the site, and most of the contributors, seem like dedicated, talented people, and you can tell based on the output.

No, the reason this site sucks is that it's been completely infested with trolls. I have never, ever seen such a thorough troll infestation, as it's even worse then Slashdot!

Being a theme site, there is the usual consternation over so-called 'adult' material, but this is a normal topic of discussion, and it's been discussed intelligently for the most part. However, we've got posts that are so utterly stupid and off topic they make me ashamed for the image this is casting on the site, KDE, Open Source, and the Internet in general.

Looking through the imagery, you'll find that 90% of the posts or more are by Anonymous, even though the registration process is unbelievably simple and easy. There isn't even an email link, you just register and log in. These people, being anonymous cowards (the term works well here) constantly snoop around the site, posting things like "You're a homo!" and "I hate muslims!" and "I'm sorry, I know this is the wrong place to ask, but how do I...?". The list goes on and on.

Not to forget the poll manipulating, the stolen art, and the art minorly altered and resubmitted as new.

Site admins, I'd like to ask you to _do_ something about all this insane nonsense before these idiots drive this incredibly promising site into the ground! I would basically ask you to simply not allow anonymous posting. This would get rid of a good amount of stupidity, as every single troll I've seen is anonymous. Secondly, you should, IMHO, develop a system where people who have submitted real, original content become moderators. Their comments are highlighted, and they can 'elevate' other posters, so that their comments become highlighted as well. This way, all you have to do to make your comment highlighted is make a single decent post. Then, you'll stick out from the AC's who have the requisite 30 second attention span to register. What do you guys think?

I re-read the above comment (aside: hey, no 'preview' button?), and realized I seemed to do a anonymous = troll. This isn't to say that every anonymous posting is a troll, but that every troll is an anonymous posting. I've seen quite a few comments that are anonymous but not trolls. Why haven't you people registered?

 Guidelines

While it is nice to ask the general public it's opinion on the content of this site, The ultimate responsibility lays on the shoulders of the web master/ staff. They SHOULD lay down the guidelines for submissions and stand by those guidelines. Anyone not wishing to follow the "rules", can go elsewhere. In the meanwhile, the user base will build as the word gets out that there is a great site for the eye candy for KDE.

 What about this?

Okay, now I haven't viewed the picture in question (and I don't intend to either), but I have a few suggestions.

Why not move anything that can be considered pornographic *in*western*culture* in to such an adult category. Okay, that might still be a bit shaky, but I think overall reasonable people can agree what this would be moved into such a category (no a naked statue doesn't need to be in such a category, but a picture of a naked man or woman should). Perhaps it would be good to say that anything that wouldn't be fit to print in a major, respectable publication such as TIME, Reader's Digest, etc., should be put into the "adult" category.

As far as the censorship point is concerned, no one has any "natural" right to demand a certain work be included on a private site. If the owner of KDE-Look.org doesn't want to include an item, he has the RIGHT to decide that. If you need to express your free speech, get your own site.

> *in*western*culture*

Yup, that is VERY shakey. First of all, why western culture? I'm sure that there are many people don't fit into "western culture" around here. Why not "eastern culture" or "southern culture" or "northern culture"?

Second of all, define "western culture". That's right. You cannot. One person who is in "western culture" who might look at once piece of artwork as "art", while another person might look at it as "erotic art", while another might look at it as softcore porn.

Really, I think we should just let the site owner decide. Personally, I say we should remove all wallpapers. We can get them from elsewhere.

And no, I don't think anything here has been "porn". Nothing was really sexual in nature or suggestive of such.

I think it probably would be wise to remove Wallpaper from the site, since any piece of wallpaper (for the most part) has nothing to do with KDE specifically.

Personally, I would remove the the GTK themes too, what do they have to do with KDE?

But back to the original point, by Western Culture, I am trying to avoid the usual comment on moral questions that "oh, that means we can only have Women in veils" so as not to offend Eastern/Arab culture.

I would suggestion then suggest taking the highest moral ground in Western Culture, i.e. everyone should have *enough* clothes on that they wouldn't get arrested for indecency here in the States. Swim suits? Ok. Anything less? No.

That should satisfy most people...

didn't read your magazine tidbit.

well the problem with that is that in different countries, nudity is more accepted or less accepted. For example, in many European(not British) versions of American magazines, there is nude pictures. It's not that it's less moral or anything, but just a different set of morals.

OK i have not read every comment here but i ask again:

1. Is a pic scanned out of some magazine or downloaded somwhere in the web worth to get uploaded when the "artist" adds e.g in Gimp a KDE logo ?

2. have i, when i worked for hours on the gimp or other programm to create a pic, to add a KDE symbol somewhere to get my artwork not deletet ?

Regards Matthias

 Wallpapers

Hmm, perhaps we shouldn't have wallpapers here at all, other then explicitly KDE related ones. However, what kde-look can do is simply provide links to sites that are specifically for high quality wallpapers of their catagory (www.animewallpaper.com for manga, www.digitalblasphemy.com for renders, etc). Backgroud images are the most cross-platform way to nifty-ize (R) your desktop, and so, there are huge amounts of them, both high quality and not. Sites devoted to a particular catagory of backgrounds are almost certainly going to have higher quality backgrounds then a more generalized site.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
