 Enlightenment!

OK, it's not a DE, but it works for me and is *VERY* fast, if you dissable some of the gadgets.

E17 will be a DE (or almost).

In my opinion, Enlightenment it one of the bests WM for linux, more than WindowMaker, iceWM, and others...

Will be possible a dual work between KDE and Enlightenment ?

Eye candy and spectacularity of Enlightenment plus elegance, easy of use, strenght and profetinality of KDE.

profetionality ??? (is it right?? I'm not english....)

make Enlightenment work along with KDE. But there are a lot of problems. Sawfish works much better with KDE.

However I hope that E17 will work with KDE 3.

 I've been using...

...E16.5 as WM together with KDE 2.2.1 and it was pretty useable except the konsole transparency, taskbar and systray.
I tried Sawfish too, but...
1) it requires some gnome libs to run configuration gui :(
2) it doesn't show my desktop icons :((
3) it places the taskbar on the top even it has been placet at the bootom... :-?

maybe in KDE3 it runs great? (i saw a screenshot - but there were no desktop icons too)

it would be grat if someone is able to write Sawfish theme support for window decorations (like we have already for IceWM and Blackbox)!

 Sawfish

If you have SuSE you can solve problems 2 and 3 by replacing the line

ksmserver --restore

in the file /opt/kde2/bin/startkde by the line

ksmserver --restore --windowmanager sawfish

i'm using mandrake 8.1 and i have ksmserver --restore --windowmanager sawfish in my /usr/bin/startkde startup script but it doesn't work correctly as you say...
which version of sawfish do you use?
mine is 1.0

I'm also using Sawfish 1.0. THe only problems I had with sawfish were dockbar icons that opened in a new window, instead of in the kicker's dock.

 Other!

by luci on: Feb 19 2002

Score 50%

I think you should add the "Other" option in the pool ;-)

I think it could be: IceWM + ROX = the fastest "Desktop" (http://rox.sourceforge.net/). Anyway I can't also wait for E17! (It looks bad - there's no visible activity on their site)
But, on the opposite side, if you disable some eye candy and font antialiasing - KDE is pretty fast then / exclude startup :-( /

 E17 progress

Well, although there is no visible progress to E17, there is a lot of progress, if you look on the BAckend libraries (Evas, Imlib2, EFSD and so on).

yeah, I'll be "that guy"....

XFce up there with Gnome and KDE? C'mon, all the 'extra' little processes that fire up with KDE and Gnome will never be as fast as lil-ol XFce.

And yeah, E17 will be sweet...I was a solid E user untill a few months ago when I decided I would try out KDE for a while....been stuck here ever since :). We'll see what happens when E17 comes out (it looks so groovy).

 DE and WM

by preater on: Mar 8 2002

Score 50%

It depends on whether you mean 'desktop environment' or 'window manager', 'desktop' isn't a very specific term. Fastest DE on my computer is Gnome, it runs slightly faster than KDE - still, I prefer KDE because IMO it's more tweakable and prettier.

Fastest WM... well, I think blackbox / fluxbox is probably the fastest WM that still looks _reasonably_ pretty. There are faster, but they don't look as good I feel. Best trade off in terms of speed / prettiness is for me Windowmaker, which is _very fast_ on an average box but can also be made to look really nice. You can also strip out the eyecandy completely for slower machines, in which case I'd say it's on a par with fluxbox for prettiness.

Purely going by eye-candy, a tricked-out KDE or Windowmaker is best, but on speed then it's blackbox or a stripped Windowmaker.

Fluxbox, granted it's built on Blackbox, is REALLY fast. It's themes are awesome too, and has 100% theme compatibility with blackbox. It's homepage is fluxbox.sourceforge.net

Wow... I will try it. IT seems to have some features that would be really, really nice in KDE.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
