 Gnome Apps

by Yaba on: Jun 27 2004

Score 50%

A lot of Gnome Applications like Abiword, Gimp or Gaim are also available for Windows.

QT is also available for Windows, so why are there almost no KDE Apps that are available for Windows at least with a reduced functionality to get rid of the dependency to the KDE core libraries?

There more we can show the Windows User, what he can expects from KDE, the more likely he will migrate to KDE entirely.

"Qt Free Editions are not available on Windows" ...
afaik this means you have to buy a commercial license to write/compile apps for windows (correct me, if i'm wrong)
the strongest argument to choose gnome for that new common linux desktop based on debian.
(what a shame - the argument against kde is better support for... window$... tststs)

Is Gnome the default Debian desktop ?
And because of that ?

afaik - no.
debian isn't very much like the other dists - there's usually no install disk or something like this (ok, there's a text script and soon even a "graphical" installer (means port of the shell script to motif :))
Therefore i don't think debian has a default on anything.
Some guy (forgot his name :) wanted (wants) to create a common distribution on debian base and chose gtk/gnome as std. (only) DE - but that's not debian.
With the above (IMHO lame) argument...
For a very short time, there was some discussion on the kde-devel list on this. (but i allready forgot it - as it didn't seem that important to me - there has never been, isn't and i guess will never be some kind of standard linux or even just a uniformed linux... :)

Well, how are free projects like SIM using QT? SIM is also available for Windows.

I have a non-commercial edition of OT 3.2 for Windows. But I do not know something about the differences between the free Linux edition and the non-commercial WINDOWS edition.

 KOffice!!!

Personally, I would like KOffice to be available for other popular platforms/os so, I could just send my kwd files and tell them (if you want to open them download KOffice). The best I can do by now, is do the same but with OpenOffice :(
GO KOffice GO!
We love you KOffice!

I agree however even just a small application for reading and printing kword and other koffice documents on other platforms would be nice.

Some people like myself have no choice but to dual boot for school work and something like this would make life much easier for me since I preffer to use KOffice rather then OpenOffice.

I think that by 'another os' the poll meant 'another os' where the application is not yet ported too. Of course it didn't meant any of the os where the application can already run.

 KDE rules

KDE since 1.0 made me to stick with linux. Each time i run windowz, i miss middle-click and tab-browsing, kicker panels, kwriter configurability, amarok playlist managebility -- all found for free (in both meanings of this word). KMail(Kontact) is probably not the best mailer(groupware), but it becomes better and better every release! And -- while integrated with KDE, it is the best solution available! K3B is great!

Under both systems i use SIM, OpenOffice.org (in SuSE 9.1 it is quite KDE-friendly), mozilla, TeX (Kile rules).

both systems have Matlab available, but now i am thinking about swithing to SciLab.

-- basicly -- that is all i need!

Offtopic: why the Java GUI is MUCH fater in Windows than in Linux ?

 Configurability

by cmalbanese on: Jun 29 2004

There is no other OS that can top KDE when it comes to making your desktop unique and laid out the way you want it.

If I wanted to make a windoz box look anything like KDE I would have to buy add on Crap-ware to do so.

Even a Mac can't touch KDE in Desktop Configurability.

Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?
 Yes, unity is alien technology!
It is less confusing than Gnome 3 default, shell.
Granny thinks it is much more usable than Gnome 2
Canonical is embarrasing itself with this split project
Gnome 3 default shell is much better
I dislike Unity, Gnome 3 default shell is alien technology!
None of the above, I like the 2Gb for free and Apple alike behavior. Will post a comment instead
