Howard Chan: I hate symbols -> I love symbols

Published Jun 27 2013 via RSS

No, no, no, I don’t mean the ancient Greek or Latin symbols, I mean symbols for KDE packages.

As you guys know, I’m a packager at Kubuntu. I seemed to join in back from my examination (status report for my examination, in case if you are worrying for me: fine) at exactly the right moment, when packagers are needed to fix those build failures and red lights at our status page (i.e. wrong symbols or files not included in .install files) for our KDE SC 4.10.80  (a.k.a. KDE SC 4.11 Beta 1) packages.

So, I started working on fixing these packages, from Monday to Thursday, full-time (between getting access to my computer and going to sleep). It was a tiring process, and I feel exhausted already on Thursday.

One of my reasons I’m exhausted is with symbols, or even worse still, new library versions. Some KDE SC 4.10.80 had new library versions. For example, okular had some new library symbols. And analitza has a completely new library version (it took me a long time to get the correct patch from upstream).

For okular I was stupid enough (and I mean really stupid enough) to edit the .symbols files by myself (NEVER DO THAT UNLESS YOU REALLY REALLY HAVE TO). Rohan Garg heard me doing that, and he was completely surprised, and showed me to this Debian Qt/KDE packaging team documentation about working with symbols files. I got to get over it with analitza (albeit, this package took me a MUCH longer time..

It was extremely challenging to deal with loads of debuild -j4 commands, symbols files and .install files. But it’s fun, and I enjoyed working with the Kubuntu Developers along the way.

Special thanks to Rohan Garg, Philip Muskovac and Jonathan Riddell for their guidance and help:)

(Uh oh, I forgotten to post it, and it’s now 4.10.90 packaging already. …..)

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
I do not like some of the changes.
KDE is taking the wrong way.
I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
