Nekhelesh Ramananthan: Clock App Update - Only 2 weeks to go!

Published Sep 27 2013 via RSS

Time is going faster than I like it to. Clock App v0.7 was released today bringing some important bug fixes and a new feature (at least partially). So here's the changelog for this release,

+Nekhelesh Ramananthan
  • Add error message if no cities were found (LP: #1222235)
  • Timer label updates before the timer hand reaches destination (LP: #1172869)
  • Cancel toolbar action needs the correct icon (LP: #1222942

Cosmetic Change

This release brings a nice cosmetic effect to the clock app which were part of the designs but only implemented now thanks to +Thomas Boutroue who was kind enough to help me. As a result, the clock went from a flat design to a nice shape with shadows and gradients.

 In addition to this the positioning of the elements are more dynamic and hence should provide the same appearance on devices which vary with respect to a Nexus 4 (other phones).

Sync with System Time

The clock app will now always be in sync with the system time. Previously if the user sets a world city as the current location, the clock app would use that timezone as default and not change if the system timezone changes. This resulted in the time shown in the clock app varying from the one shown in the indicator and the welcome screen. This has been fixed. As a bonus, the clock app is now able to automatically retrieve the user's current location using geoIP. This will be replaced with GPS next week.

HUD Support

HUD support finally comes to the clock app. All actions such as adding a new timer, alarm, world clock now appear in the HUD (only on the phone). Adding HUD actions to a toolbar button is as simple as a few lines of code as shown below.

        Action {
        id: addTimerAction
        iconSource: Qt.resolvedUrl("../images/add_icon.png")
        text: i18n.tr("Add Timer")
        description: i18n.tr("Add a new timer")
        keywords: i18n.tr("Add;Timer;Eggtimer;Preset;Ticker")
        onTriggered: {
            state = "addPreset"

Any toolbar button which uses this action will be shown in the HUD. If you do not want a HUD action for certain common buttons such as Save or Cancel, removing the Action {} would suffice.

About 80% of alarms support has landed in the clock app.  The Alarms has been connected to the respective platform API (Evoultion Data Server - EDS Backend) thanks to +Renato Araujo and +Zsombor Egri. The only bit remaining is triggering a notification when the alarm has been triggered. This requires some design and implementation in the platform side which is out of my hands. We are however discussing with the platform developers on how this can be implemented. Meanwhile you can test the Alarms UI in the alarms tab. If you find any bugs there, please report bugs asap at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-clock-app/+filebug.

Last Minute Design Tweaks

+Lina Pio, the clock app's designer has come up with some last minute design tweaks that need to be implemented. At this point, most of the high priority bugs have been fixed. There are less than 10 bugs (low and medium priority) that require attention before release. That will be the focus for the upcoming 2 weeks. If you can spare some time, help us get rid of those bugs. I will end this post with something that +Nicholas Skaggs shared sometime back regarding bugs and is quite funny.

How do you like Plasma 5?
 The best KDE Desktop ever.
 Definitely a nice improvement.
 Not decided yet. Haven't tried it yet.
 I do not like some of the changes.
 KDE is taking the wrong way.
 I am still sticking with KDE 3.5.
 I have no opinion, but wanted to vote anyway.
